Burlacci[edit]

Believed to have been created by a god of laughter, burlacci are a race of clown-like humanoids which act as if the world was a stage for a comedy show.

Personality[edit]

No amount of precision can define burlacci's personality as a whole, as the diverse specimens that make up this race are very different in their way of expressing themselves and receiving input from the outside world.

More or less, it can be said that they all like a good joke (except for the pierrot) and live to perform, entertain (themselves and/or others) and generally having a good laugh before the world comes to an end.

Theirs is both a stupendous and cursed life, almost tragic, like most artists, living on the verge between happiness and hardship.

Physical Description[edit]

They are humanoid-looking, mainly similar to humans, but their countenance may also resemble other humanoid species.

They have, however, characteristics traits, that make them stand out from other humanoids, as they appears as if always in clown costumes and make-up, often with sproportionate features and bodies, almost cartoonish. All of them share a peculiar mannerism and gait.

There types of burlacci, each with a different style of clothing and skin complexion.

Auguste: These burlacci are the most common type, and the better known among the general population. They wear strange, colourful and mismatched clothes, often too big, with comically-oversized shoes, red, ball-shaped noses, usually white make-up with colours around their eyes and mouth, and they sport crazy hair of any color, sometimes cut short o top of their head. They are loud, humorous, and often obnoxious.

Harlequin: Often confused with the auguste, these burlacci also have colorful clothes, but finely checkered. They have the top half of their face of jet black, with feature that resemble a mask in the shape of a indefinite animal, very similar to a fox, sometimes with a prominent nose. They often wear some kind of hats. They are agile, quickwitted, very similar in personality to auguste burlacci, just less brutish and more romantic.

Mime: A special type of burlacci, that typically wears a striped-shirt, monochrome trousers, suspenders, a bowler, often with dull, monotone colors. They are completely silent, and instead express themselves through the miming of actions, gestures or full acting. Seemingly, all other burlacci can understand them perfectly.

Pierrot: Pierrot burlacci are the complete opposite of auguste burlacci. They wear a loose white blouse with large buttons and wide white pantaloons. Sometimes they appears with a frilled collaret and a hat, usually with a close-fitting crown and wide round brim and, more rarely, with a conical shape like a dunce's cap. They have chalk-white skin, with eyes and mouth circled with black or deep blue, sometimes with a single or double tear-shaped mark under their eyes, in black, blue or red.

Pulcinella: A very rare type of burlacci, their appearance includes a humpback, a crooked nose, gangly legs, a potbelly, large cheeks, and a gigantic mouth. As harlequins, they also may have the top of their head in the shape of a black mask, humanoid and with a big nose. Often they appear older than they are. They wear clothes often similar to the pierrot, but with more colorful additions. They are cunning social-climbers, and oportunists, but can show heroic qualities and often help those in need.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • Humanoid (Spiritfolk)
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, a burlacci has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Burlacci base land speed is 30 feet.
  • Clown Act (Su): Each burlacci may produce magical effects with their comedian acting. Choose one of the following:
  • Ballon Head: A burlacci with this power may use a standard action which doesn't provoke to detach its head and transform it into a balloon. While the transformation is active the burlacci's head has a flight speed of 15 feet (poor) and may move once each turn, independently of the character's actions. It has a the same AC of the burlacci, apart from any armor, shield or natural armor the character posses, and, for a Medium burlacci, a +2 size bonus to AC as it's a Tiny creature. It can move, see, speak and do everything the burlacci could do. It's immune to non-magic bludgeoning damage, but even one point of damage makes it pop and inflicts one point of damage per HD to the burlacci. The head reforms immediately on the user, as it does if the distance between the balloon and the body is over 100 feet. Dismissing the effect is a free action. It can produce this effect one minute per level per day, but each use consumes 1 minute, regardless of the actual duration.
  • Circus Gag: The most common Clown Act, this power allows the user to target a single target within 20 feet and use a standard action to force a Fortitude, Reflex or Will save (the burlacci's choice each time it uses this ability) to perform a thematically reasonable gag (such as spraying water, throwing pies or bananas, a shocking handshake, etc.) to leave the target clumsy for one round. This power recharges every 1d3 rounds and the DC is 10 + 1/2 HD + Charisma modifier.
  • Mime Wall: Always almost exclusive of mime burlacci, this power allows the user, with a Perform (mime, act, or comedy) check (with a DC of 15) and a standard action to create an invisible wall of force adjacent to it. Initially, the wall stands on the edge of a single 5 ft. square. Every turn the wall may be expanded in any direction as a standard action, always by 5 ft. The wall disappears immediately if the burlacci isn't adjacent to any of its parts anymore, or after a minute, whichever comes first. It can also create and mantain a force stool as a swift action, but only if adjacent to it.
  • Monocycle: Burlacci with this act may replicate the effect of TK bike as a standard action, creating a monocycle instead of a bicycle (statistically the same thing). Their manifester level equals their HD but they can't augment this power, unless they have actual power points to spend on it.
  • Pogo Stick: With this act, a burlacci may summon a pogo stick as a move action and jump on it. While on the pogo stick, the burlacci gain a +4 competence bonus to Jump checks and may make long jumps without needing a running start and it counts as being one size larger for the purpose of high jumps. The pogo stick allows the user to avoid an additional 20 feet of falling damage, and, if the burlacci jumps onto an enemy, it allows to make an attack which deals half the damage the burlacci would have suffered (even the damage negated) - without adding the Strength modifier. The effect lasts one minute before needing to be activated again. Only the burlacci may use it, as the stick disappears if it leaves the possession of the character.
  • Ventriloquism: A burlacci with this power may always replicate the effects of the ventriloquism spell, as an extraordinary ability.
