Using Sky Vehicles[edit]

Sky vehicles use Profession (Pilot). They're basically sea vehicles with a fly speed. You can use Pilot similar to Ride. Ships take their size penalty to the AC dodge attempts from evading via Pilot, so it may be impossible for large ships. However they have both hit points and typically active defenses, like missiles and shields. Fluff this later.

Creating a Sky Vehicle[edit]

To create a sky vehicle, one must start with a general idea of the size of the craft. The size of the vehicle determines the base price of the frame, as well as how many components you can add. Components have a size (for example, 10x10 feet) which takes up roughly an appropriate amount of space in your frame. Some components have a space of -, meaning they take up no significent amount of extra mass on the vehicle by virtue of being part of the frame or being small. If you run out of space, you should consider getting a larger frame. Sizes and shapes are purposefully abstract so you may define your ship looking anything from a space age fighter place to a classical fantasy airship to a steam powered blimp and more. For segmented and oblong ships, simply buy more than one frame of the appropriate size (round down). For example a ship which is 30 feet wide and 100 feet long would easily be three Huge frames connected into an oblong vehicle (as huge can be 16-32 ft, and three of them stacks to 96 ft long, close enough for our purposes). Use the actual height or length, rather than the number of squares it would actually take up in combat. Consult the table below to pick the size of your airship's frame.

After purchasing the frame, you may proceed to fill it with components. Only two components are required to make the simpliest of sky vehicles, a cockpit for its would-be pilot and a source of propulsion, be it balloon, sail, jet engine, or other. You may as as many components as you can fit within your frame. Components take up component spaces, depending on the general size and bulk of the component. Some components require a minimum size they can be placed upon. For example a hang glider (medium size) cannot hold a ballista (which can only fit on Huge or larger craft). Even then, if you want multiple ballistas you may need an even larger ship to obtain the number you need.

Sky Vehicles Components[edit]

Vehicle components are major sections of the vehicle which perform certain functions. Components can either be internal or external. External components can be targeted and potentially damaged by called shot attempts against them. For that reason important parts such as the core and fuel tanks are often internal. Some parts are external only, such as wings or most propulsion methods. Components possess their own HD and hp, or hp equal to 1/10th the ship's hp, whichever is more. Components which are broken, destroyed, or obliterated may have negative consequences on the vehicle beyond mere damage. Components follow the following format:

Example Component
Name Pre-requisites Effect (Normal) Effect (Broken) Component Space Hardness Hp Weight Added Description Price
Example Component Requires Cockpit It works. It doesn't work so well. 2 10 15 20 lbs The example component does something interesting. I'm sure it'll be useful, except that it's an example so not really. 100 gp

The complete list of components can be found here.

Sky Vehicles Materials[edit]

The material a vehicle is made from determines the hardness associated with the craft and most of its components, its bonus hit points, and its weight. As lift is often a tradeoff between weight and thrust weight can become important to consider, not to mention price.

The statistics below are for a single component space. To determine the total weight, hit points, and price multiple the prices below by the number of component spaces you have. In addition it is possible to mix and match materials, applying it to individual component spaces if you so wish. Usually the only concern with differences in material between interior and exterior walls. Use the tables below to find the percentage of interior to exterior, and the cost of materials.

Interior and Exterior Construction
