Savant Artificer
The equivalent of a mad scientist for arcane casters, the savant artificer stores her magic in strange arcane implements. The stereotypical savant artificer is an eccentric and foolhardy inventor who pushes the limits of their magic by building more and more esoteric devices. It should be said that many are scientific and patient minds, who carefully learn the limits of their invention… just so they can push them.
Class: Occultist
Level: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 20th
Replaces: Weapon & Armor Proficiencies, Implements (Altered), Spellcasting (Altered), Object Reading, Focus Power (3rd), Aura Sight, Magic Circles, Outside Contact, Binding Circle, Fast Circle.
Benefit: A savant artificer gain the following class features:
Spellcasting: A savant artificer is an arcane spellcaster instead of a psychic spellcaster. A savant artificer can cast occultist spells while wearing light armor and using a shield without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. Like any other arcane spellcaster, a savant artificer wearing medium or heavy armor incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component. A multiclass savant artificer still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from other classes. Every savant artificer spell has a somatic component, but does not have any verbal component unless the spell has the language-dependent descriptor.
Implements: Instead of an object of occult powers, a savant artificer's implement is an arcane device of her own making. Her implements are 'devices', 'trinkets' or 'baubles' of various kinds. These items are of negligible weight, and usually have no obvious use. Due to the shape of her implement, the savant artificer cannot select panoplies. The savant artificer may attach her implement to actual equipment and wearable items, such as weapons and clothing, allowing them to be easily transported. However, as a result, the savant artificer cannot benefit from panoplies.
Due to the complexity of the savant artificer's work, and safety features included in their design, her implements only grant their resonant powers to those who are authorized to use them. This always includes the savant artificer, but also any creature she grants access to. The process to authorize a creature access to her implements requires 10 minutes, and lasts for 24 hours. Finally, a savant artificer implement can be used as focus for spells, replacing material components of 10 gp or lower.
Power Flux (Su): A savant artificer's implements are more potent than normal, if one of her focus powers deals energy damage then she adds her Intelligence bonus to the damage roll.
This ability replaces the savants artificer's proficiency with medium armor.
Inventor (Ex): A 2nd level savant artificer add half her class level as a bonus on Craft and Knowledge (Engineering) checks. A savant artificer takes half the normal amount of time to create alchemical and technological items with the craft skill. Furthermore, the savant artificer can use the related Craft skill to identify magic items as if using detect magic (such as Alchemy for a potion). He must study the item for 1 minute to make such a check.
This ability replaces object reading.
Craft Wondrous Item: A savant artificer of 3rd level gains Craft Wondrous Item as a bonus feat. If she already had this feat, she gains another item creation feat she meets the prerequisites of.
This ability replaces the focus power gained at 3rd level.
Arcane Confluence (Su): A savant artificer of 5th level has learned how to channel her arcane devices through nearby allies, resonating through their body or weapons. Whenever the savant artificer uses a non-damaging focus power which affects a single touched creature or piece of equipment, she may expend an additional point of mental focus to affect all allies within 15 feet.
This ability replaces aura sight.
Unbound Artisan (Ex): At 8th level, a savant artificer gains the ability to craft a wide variety of magical items. When crafting an item, a savant artificer can substitute a Use Magic Device check (DC 15 + spell level for arcane spells, DC 20 + spell level for a psychic spells or 25 + spell level for divine spells) in place of a required spell she doesn't know or can't cast (even in the case of potions of scrolls), as long as the chosen spell's school matches one of her implement. If the check succeeds, the savant artificer can create the item as if she had cast the required spell. If it fails, she cannot complete the item. She does not expend the gp costs for making the item; her progress is simply arrested. She cannot retry this Use Magic Device check for that spell until she gains a new level.
This ability replaces magic circles, binding circles and fast circles
Overload Implement (Su): At 8th level savant artificer can overload one of her arcane devices to increase the potency of a spell. In order to do so she must spend 1 mental focus stored in the implement as a free action as she casts a spell whose school matches the implement's school. The spell receives a +2 bonus to its caster level and its A savant artificer can only use overload implement on a spell she casts immediately, and not through a contingency or other methods of delayed casting.
After the spell is cast, the implement becomes inactive for 1d4 rounds. While inactive the savant artificer cannot use the mental focus stored in it, the focus's base power and does not count as having the implement for the purpose of casting spells. At 12th and 16th level, the bonus to caster level and DC increases by 1. At 20th level any spell she has enhanced with this ability is modified by one of the following metamagic feat at no cost: Enlarge Spell, Empower Spell, Extend Spell, Persistent Spell, Widen Spell.
This ability replaces outside contact.
