A pale thin naked humanoid figure lurches at you with an unsteady gate, its skin the smell and texture of flesh recently unbandaged. Its face is completely smooth and blank, head twitching erratically side to side and small ever-changing black inkblots appearing and vanishing on its visage.
Strange nightmares which originally wander the foggy realm of the ethereal plane, they sometimes slip out in weak points in reality where places have been long abandoned or lost. They appear as featureless naked humanoids with an erratic and disturbing jerky motion to their bodies. They seek to become someone, and hunt down others to steal away their face and personality. They leech body heat on a touch, and steal memories and minds of those they absorb. When they get strong enough they multiply, or if they are lucky they will retain a warped semblance of their meal as their new personality.
Raw shocks do not speak, and do not respond to communication. However they appear to have some form of telepathy among others of their kind. Once they absorb someone (completely or partially) they obtain the languages and communication of the absorbed creature.
Combat[edit]
Raw shocks seek to obtain identities, and typically set up ambushes to allow this to occur. If there are more than one, they will actively make tactical choices to maximize their chances, and expand their aura of memories as far out as possible. Raw shocks with pre-existing absorbed memories may alter their behavior and outlook to match that of their prey.
Aura of Memories (Su): As a free action a raw shock can emit an aura out to a 20 ft radius centered on it. Creatures which enter the aura must make a Will save (DC 16 negates) or begin having their most inner nightmares appear. The affected area appears frosted over with ice and snow, temperatures seem to drop, and major images of affected creatures nightmares manifest as a free action. A successful save reveals it to be an illusion but retains vague shadows moving about. These images render affected creatures shaken as long as they remain in the aura and for 1d6 rounds after they leave.
The auras interact with other raw shocks. Two raw shocks within each others auras expand their aura twice as big (40 ft). This can stack, and multiple raw shocks in the area may create auras miles in size if there are enough of them.
Change Shape (Su): A raw shock can assume the shape of any Small or Medium humanoid it has slain via Drain. In humanoid form, the doppelganger loses its natural attacks (but retains the Drain ability). A raw shock can remain in its humanoid form until it chooses to revert or chooses to adopt a new one via draining. A change in form cannot be dispelled, but a raw shock reverts to its natural form when killed. A true seeing spell or ability reveals its natural form.
When if it doesn't slay anyone with Drain, it subconsciously adopts some traits of those it manages to successfully touch with Drain. It is not enough for a disguise, but creatures whose traits have been stolen take a -1 morale penalty on attack rolls and DCs against the raw shock. This partial transformation can last up to 24 hours.
Detect Thoughts (Su): A raw shock can continuously use detect thoughts as the spell (caster level 20th; Will DC 16 negates). It can suppress or resume this ability as a free action. The save DC is Wisdom-based with a +2 from Ability Focus.
Drain (Su): As a touch attack, the raw shock drains the body heat of anyone it touches dealing 5d4 points of cold damage, and forcing a Will save (DC 14 negates) or have some memories stolen away. This is effectively a daunt level as the original creature's memories become cloudy and indistinct. The save DC is Wisdom-based.
If a creature is slain by drain, their body shrivels and becomes pale and gaunt. In 24 hours, they will rise as a newly created raw shock unless the body is revived, or destroyed. In addition the raw shock gains 1 Hit Die, and its Strength, Constitution, and natural armor increase by +1. Its attack bonus and saves improve as normal for an aberration of its Hit Dice, and it gains skill points, feats, and ability score improvements normally.
The raw shock only advances by draining creatures whose Hit Dice or levels are equal to or greater than its own current total. A raw shock that reaches 9 Hit Dice through feeding immediately splits into 1d3+1 normal raw shocks upon completion of the act.
Immunities (Ex): The raw shock is immune to charm and sleep effects.
Sun Vulnerability (Ex): Raw shocks dislike heat and light (in spite of body heat being their main desire). Though it doesn't harm them they usually avoid sunlight and warm areas. They also take an additional +1 point of damage from any [Fire] or [Light] effect per dice.
