The wall began to bleed, as stone turned to flesh and iron claws tore from its pulsating mass.
Fiends which perished in the Plane of Earth were reborn as avatars of the suffocating embrace of being entombed alive. Their torsos bear no head, but a single baleful eye often hidden behind stone and iron scales as a hardened lid. Two bulky arms end in drill like gripping claws, and their body trails off in a powerful muscular tail covered in stony carapace. These creatures burrow through both soil and stone, with stone lairs identifiable by the blood soaked tunnels they leave behind.
Combat[edit]
Petriglares are ambush predators, hiding within the ground and walls and erupting out with violence. Those that meet their gaze feel their bodies calcifying as they are buried alive.
Digger Claws (Ex): Petriglare claws are very tough and powerful. They count as adamantine weapons (including bypassing hardness), and have a critical of 20/x3.
Erupting Exit (Ex): When a petriglare surfaces from a burrowable medium, they can choose to do so explosively once per round. All creatures in its space and within its reach must make a Reflex save against being knocked prone. The DC is Strength based.
Pummel (Ex): At the start of its turn, the petriglare may make a single free attack against any number of prone creatures within its reach.
Stoning Eye (Su): Gazing into the baleful eye of the petriglare causes the body to petrify and harden. All creatures within 30 ft who can see the petriglare must make a Fortitude save or be afflicted by slow for as long as they can see it + 1 round after. A successful save renders the target immune to stoning eye for 24 hours.
Those afflicted by slow must continue to make saves, with a second save afflicting them with flesh to stone. Successful saves against the second effect prevents petrification but does not grant immunity. The saving throw is Wisdom based, with a +2 bonus from Ability Focus.
In truth, the stone eye does not merely petrify. It can also unpetrify (a standard action). While it never has a need to unpetrify its victims, it can use this ability passively to convert stone in front of it into flesh. For this reason, it can burrow through stone as well as soil, but always leaves a bloody tunnel behind as it does so.
The stone eye is the source of its only vulnerability to precision damage. If the petriglare closes its eye (a free action) it becomes immune to critical hits and sneak attacks. Its eye is always closed while burrowing.
