Inspired Pupil

Inspired pupils are prodigious young men and women who trained as mage's apprentice, but rather than sheer magical potential they possess incredible talents. Most train to become universalist wizards, eventually finding their true calling later. While still adept magic-users, they cannot reach the same magical height as their more focused brethren. Instead learning how to best use the tricks they have learned as apprentices. However they are incredibly skilled in more than just magic, including handling themselves in direct battle much better than their peers.

Class: Investigator

Level: 1st-20th

Replaces: Armor Proficiency, Alchemy, Trapfinding, Poison Lore, Poison Resistance, Studied Strike, Poison Immunity

Benefit: An inspired pupil gains the following class features:

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Inspired pupils are proficient with all simple weapons, plus the hand crossbow, rapier, sap, shortbow, short sword, and sword cane. They are not proficient with any type of armor or shield. Armor interferes with an inspired pupil’s gestures, which can cause her spells with somatic components to fail (see Arcane Spells and Armor).

Spellcasting: An inspired pupil casts arcane spells drawn from the sorcerer/wizard spell list. An inspired pupil must prepare her spells ahead of time, but unlike a wizard, her spells are not expended when they’re cast. Instead, she can cast any spell that she has prepared consuming a spell slot of the appropriate level, assuming she hasn’t yet used up her spell slots per day for that level. To learn or cast a spell, an inspired pupil must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell’s level. The saving throw DC against an inspired pupil’s spell is equal to 10 + the spell’s level + the inspired pupil’s Intelligence modifier.

Like other spellcasters, an inspired pupil can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. She receives the same number of spell slots per day as a bard of her investigator level, including for cantrips. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Intelligence score. The inspired pupil prepares a number of spells each day equal to the number of spells a bard knows at her investigator level, minus 1 at each spell level.

An inspired pupil prepares her spells from a spellbook, much like wizards. Her spellbook functions just like a wizard’s spellbook. Sorcerer/Wizard spells of 7th level and above are not on the inspired pupil’s class spell list, and an inspired pupil cannot use spell completion or spell trigger magic items (without making a successful Use Magic Device check) of sorcerer/wizard spells of 7th level or higher.

This ability replaces Alchemy.

Arcane Bond (Ex): An inspired pupil gains the arcane bond ability of a wizard of her class level.

This ability replaces trapfinding and trap sense.

Apprentice's Trick (Ex): At 2nd level, an inspired pupil gain the hand of the apprentice ability of a universalist wizard, using her investigator level rather than her wizard level. Despite being a ranged attack, she treats attack with her hand of the apprentice ability as melee attack for the purpose of studied combat.

At 8th level, when an inspired pupil may use this ability as a full-round action to make a full attack through the hand of the apprentice ability. She can divide the attacks granted as she wishes between each target in range.

This ability replaces poison lore and poison resistance.

Inspired Spell (Ex): A 4th level inspired pupil can expend 1 point of inspiration when casting a spell, if she does she adds +1 to the spell's caster level or +1 to the spell's DC. When she uses this ability on a damaging spell, that spells deals an additional +1 damage per dice rolled.

This ability replaces studied strike.

Prodigious Spellcasting (Ex): At 11th level, the inspired pupil increases the number of spells of each level she can cast each day by one and increases the DC of all of her spells by 2.

This ability replaces poison immunity.

Investigator Talents: An inspired pupil selects investigator talents as normal, except she cannot select the alchemist discovery investigator talent. Additionally the inspired pupil has access to the following investigator talent.

Arcanist Exploit: An inspired pupil may pick any arcanist exploit beside bloodline development, familiar, potent spell or school understanding. If the exploit require the expenditure of points from her arcane reservoir she instead expend an equal amount of points from her inspiration pool.

Master's Trick (Su): The inspired pupil gain an additional number of uses of hand of apprentice ability equal to half her class level. Additionally when she cast a spell with a range of touch, she may expend one use of her hand of apprentice ability to deliver the spell through the ranged weapon attack made as part of it. This otherwise function as the magus's spellstrike ability.

Potent Inspired Spell (Ex): When the inspired pupil uses inspired spells, she instead increases the spell's caster level or the spell's DC by 2, or both by 1.
