Initiative Contests[edit]

Any time that two or more creatures attempt to interrupt the other or to act in response to one other, in response to the same trigger, or otherwise at the same time (usually due to a readied or immediate action), they may make opposed initiative checks to determine the order in which the actions are resolved. This check takes a penalty depending on the action cost (-0 for swift or immediate actions, -2 for move-equivalent or attack actions, -5 for standard actions, -10 for full-round actions) and a bonus between +0 and +5 if the action is readied, depending on the specificity of the trigger, at the DM's discretion. Extremely general triggers, such as "If creature X takes any action" would gain a +0 bonus, while extremely specific triggers, such as "If creature X casts specific spell Y" or "if I hear someone shout the secret password" should gain +5. If the action order resolves in such a way that a creature's declared action is impossible, they do not expend any resources.
