Halberdier

Eschewing the use of a mount, a halberdier is a footsoldier or knight who fights with a polearms, typically the halberd. Halberdiers are sometimes found as mercenaries or skilled guards of some kind, with the highest ranked one being halberd-wielding royal guards. The halberdier archetype was designed after the Disciple of the Pike but with neutral flavor.

Class: Cavalier

Level: 1st-20th

Replaces: Mount, Cavalier's Charge, Expert Trainer, Banner, Mighty Charge, Greater Banner, Supreme Charge

Benefit: A halberdier gain the following class features:

Halberdier Expertise (Ex): A halberdier gain Weapon Focus with one weapon from the polearm or spear weapon group of her choice. Additionally she may treat any weapons from the polearm or spear weapon group she has selected with Weapon Focus as finessable weapons.

At 4th level at the start of her turn, she may treat any polearm she wields as if it had reach. Alternatively if her polearm has reach, she may treat it as if it did not. However if she does, she takes a –2 penalty to attack rolls with her polearm until the start of her next turn. Additionally she gains Combat Reflexes as a bonus feat.

This ability replaces mount and expert trainer.

Pike Charge (Ex): At 3rd level, a halberdier learns to make more accurate charge attacks with weapons from the polearms or spears fighter weapon group (Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook 56). She receives a +4 bonus on melee attacks when charging with a polearm or spear (instead of the normal +2). In addition, the halberdier takes no penalty to her AC after making a charge attack with a polearm or spear.

This ability replaces cavalier’s charge.

Weapon Training (Ex): At 5th level, a halberdier gains weapon training, just like a fighter. She must select polearms or spears as her weapon group, and never gains another weapon group. Her bonuses with the selected group otherwise progress as though her fighter level were equal to his cavalier level.

This ability replaces banner and greater banner.

Agile Charger (Ex): At 11th level, a halberdier takes no penalties caused by difficult terrain while charging. Her movement is still hampered by obstacles, poor visibility, and other conditions. This ability doesn’t allow her to move through impassable terrain.

This ability replaces mighty charge.

Deadly Charge (Ex): At 20th level, whenever a halberdier makes a charge attack with a polearm or spear, she deals double the normal amount of damage. In addition, if she confirms a critical hit on a deadly charge, the target is stunned for 1d4 rounds. If the target succeeds at a Will save (DC = 10 + the cavalier’s base attack bonus), it is instead staggered for 1d4 rounds.

This ability replaces supreme charge.
