Some manner of mechanical wyvern or bat like creature sailed overhead, as on its back a turret spun to attention and began raining lasers at its pursuers.

Designed superficially after the giant hercules bat, the veribird is a light troop transport vehicle designed to bring creatures into dangerous territories while flying autonomously in the likely event its occupants cannot pilot it. It can fit up to eight medium creatures within its body, entered through the head or back compartments, and many but not all sport a back mounted laser turret for self defense. However, the veribirds are not expressly designed for combat and usually must be piloted to engage its weapons properly.

Composed of a composite of materials to keep it light and nimble, only the outer skin is metal while the interior is various more flexible but weaker parts. It flies through magically augmented jets assisted by its bat-like wings for lift during forward flight. It comes equipped with a chin mounted MAgical Direction And Ranging (MADAR) system to keep track of local objects and threats.

Veribirds have a 40 ft wingspan and when "standing" they are about 30 ft at the shoulder as they stand in a tripod pose raised up. They weight about 10,000 lbs. They understand Common, but do not speak and can only display on interior monitors any basic pre-programmed replies and data.

Combat[edit]

Veribirds do not naturally engage in combat, but perform whatever tasks they are ordered to within the limits of their bot programming. When manned, creatures within can engage its heat ray as if using a ranged weapon on the back of a mount, using the veribirds attack bonus or the creature using it, whichever is better. Some models lack the heat ray and can only rely on melee.

Crew: Veribirds can hold up to 8 medium creatures, and it requires no pilot. However a creature can choose to pilot it directly. When piloted use the veribirds or the pilot's BAB and Dexterity for the purpose of attack rolls.

Disruptor Ray (Su): Veribirds come with a disruptor ray superficially similar to a scorching ray spell, except it is a supernatural ability with a range increment (rather than a maximum range) of 100 ft that deals acid damage. It fires only a single ray, or three rays on a full attack. Creatures can manually control the ray using their own actions instead of the veribird, allowing it to continue moving or acting of its own violation. Treat it as if attacking with a ranged weapon from a mount for the purpose of penalties.

Heavy Lifter (Ex): Veribirds act as quadrupeds for lifting capacity, and may fly even under a medium or heavy load at reduced speed.

MADAR (Su): Veribirds have a special magical detection method that acts like a wide area blindsense, except it only detects creatures and objects of Large or larger size within 1 mile and it is obstructed by physical objects and cover allowing creatures to hide from this sense. MADAR is vague, and only determines that something is there and not its shape or what it is. It's greatest benefit is being able to continue to fly even if visibility is 0. MADAR can be toggled on and off as a swift action, while it is active the veribird gives off a strong aura of divination, caster level 16th, and can be seen by detect magic even outside of its 60 ft range as a glowing point of light.

Programming: The veribird possesses the following programs: Calculate, Collect, Reposition, and Self-Preservation.
