The sky darkened with the bodies of hundreds of pale starving dragons each crying for the blood of the living. The dragon lord of blood has risen again!
When the process to make a vampiric dragon fails, or sometimes intentionally on part of a vampiric dragon themselves, the result is a vampiric dragonspawn. The dragon dies, their body curls up and forms a knotted egg of hardened flesh. After 1 month the "egg" breaks forth and the dragon is reborn in a new and horrible form. It loses its previous abilities, gaining or losing size, becoming a pale dreadful thing. Its wings are leathery and bat-like, its body transparently pale and gaunt. Its fangs are large and pronounced and its eyes a blank milky white. They have long lashing tongues with a hole within to lap up and drink any stray spilled blood, and ruddy stains around their mouth and teeth from the dreadful nature of their breath weapons. When they feed their bellies bloat up and they can store up to twice their body weight in blood.
Vampiric dragonspawn are seen as even more loathsome than vampiric dragon themselves, and vampiric dragons may use the transformation as punishment on true dragons condemning them to this ignoble shape. While vampiric dragonspawn retain their personality they are utterly loyal and have no free will against the commands of their creator. If their creator should die, this restriction is freed and thus they may act on their own or even find a way to become a full vampiric dragon. Thus all vampiric dragonspawn secretly lust for their masters destruction. And all vampiric dragons often plot against their own spawn, ensuring that if they die so to their spawn.
Vampiric dragonspawn can be birthed from any creature with the Dragon subtype or Dragonblooded creatures, and thus vampire dragons covet them to act as easy to control fuel to make more spawn. They stand 5 ft at the shoulder, 10 ft long, and weight 1000 lbs starved of blood. A fed vampiric dragonspawn will be tinged pink or red, with a bright crimson and bloated belly.
Combat[edit]
Vampiric dragonspawn are often starved and half crazed, but they have little choice for they are enthralled to their vampiric dragon master. They often fight like feral beasts against things that pose no threat, and will employ any ambush, terror tactic, or foul play to achieve victory against more cunning foes. They often come in groups and overwhelm with numbers and tactics. Their gluttony for blood and greed for gold knows no bounds even as they hand both to their master in great amount.
Blood Drain (Ex): A vampiric dragonspawn can suck blood from a living victim more vigorously than its normal bite attack by making a successful grapple check. If it pins the foe, it drains blood, dealing 1d4 points of Constitution damage each round the pin is maintained in addition to any other damage caused that round. On each such successful attack, the vampiric dragonspawn gains 5 hp.
Vampiric dragonspawn often overdrink more than they need, up to twice their own normal bodyweight. This excess blood is brought back to their vampiric dragon masters and vomited back up, their poisons keeping the blood fresh for a long time (see Poison).
Breath Weapon (Su): Vampiric dragonspawns have two breath weapons, a 40 ft cone of negative energy and a 80 ft line of vampiric breath. The cone deals 8d8 points of negative energy damage from a bloody red mist with a DC 16 Reflex save for half. The line is a Fortitude save again suffering bleedout losing 20% of their maximum hp, and granting the dragon 5 hp per creature it successfully bled out. A successful save negates. As normal for a breath weapon it can only use it once every 1d4 rounds. The DC is Constitution based.
Fast Healing (Ex): A vampiric dragonspawn heals 5 points of damage each round so long as it has at least 1 hit point. If reduced to 0 hit points in combat, it automatically assumes gaseous form and attempts to escape. It must reach its lair within 2 hours or be utterly destroyed. (It can travel up to nine miles in 2 hours.) Any additional damage dealt to a vampiric dragonspawn forced into gaseous form has no effect. Once at rest in its lair, a vampiric dragonspawn is helpless. It regains 1 hit point after 1 hour, then is no longer helpless and resumes healing at the rate of 5 hit points per round. Unlike vampiric dragons, vampiric dragonspawn do not require any valuables for them to possess a "lair", and they usually share a lair with their creator. Its fast healing is suppressed while in the presence of sunlight.
Gaseous Form (Su): As a standard action, a vampiric dragonspawn can assume gaseous form at will as the spell (caster level 5th), but it can remain gaseous indefinitely and has a fly speed of 20 feet with perfect maneuverability.
Poison (Su): Vampiric dragonspawn have a powerful anticoagulant and preservative. Those that fail a DC 16 Fortitude save and have taken any damage begin to bleed and lose 2 hp/level each round until they get at least 1 point of magical healing or a DC 15 Heal check as a standard action. It also preserves the blood, keeping it moist oxygenated and fresh for a year and a day as if affected by gentle repose. There is no secondary effect to the poison, and the DC is Consitution based.
Spider Climb (Ex): A vampiric dragonspawn can climb sheer surfaces as though with a spider climb spell.
Weaknesses (Ex): A vampiric dragonspawn is a lesser form of vampiric dragon and possess all the same weaknesses and then a few more. Unlike their greater kin, they actively take damage while in sunlight and are treated as if burning. They also can be outright slain, not merely coup de graced, by a wooden piercing weapon, Dragon Bane, or good aligned weapon.
