Pugilist[edit]

The Pugilist fights with his fists, with padded or weighted gloves, or with brass knuckles. He dances around his opponent, softening him up with quick disorienting punches and then clobbering him with massive finishing blows. He can suck up a lot of damage, if the damage is of a certain kind, and avoid most other damage, but he is fundamentally a specialist, adept at fighting a single humanoid opponent who is wearing light or no armor.

Making a Pugilist[edit]

Against a single humanoid opponent in light or no armor the Pugilist is devastating, but that is a narrow subset of the opponents he may face. Parties might opt to have him along for city adventures, but he is not very useful when up against magical beasts - or magic in general.

Abilities: Strength and Dexterity are the most important abilities for the Pugilist, although Charisma can help with certain underhanded tricks. Constitution is also high up on the list.

Races: Any race that can make a fist can be a Pugilist.

Alignment: Any.

Starting Gold: 2d4 x 10 gp.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Pugilist.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Pugilist is proficient in Bludgeoning, Punching weapons such as: Bare Knuckles, Padded Gloves, Weighted Gloves, and Brass Knuckles. He has no armor or shield proficiencies.

Float like a Butterfly (Ex): The Pugilist has made an exhaustive study of footwork and rolling with punches. This grants him a percent miss chance to avoid any attack directed specifically at him. See the column FlaB for the miss chance at each level.

Hardened (Ex): The Pugilist trains to be able to shrug off punishment. He gains damage resistance to bludgeoning, sonic, and force damage equal to his Pugilist class level. This resistance applies to damage inflicted from Slam, Crush, Constrict, Tail-Slap, and Trample attacks, as well as Falling.

Rolling Thunder: When fighting a single opponent the Pugilist gains a cumulative bonus to hit for each successful punch he lands during the round. This bonus is lost if the Pugilist misses, when the round ends, or if the Pugilist attacks a different opponent.

Jab: A Jab is a light punch made before the main sequence of attacks. It does 1d3 damage and counts toward the Sting like a Bee hit count. The Pugilist gets one jab at level 1, one at level 5, and a third Jab at level 10. He is free to make a Jab during his normal combat round. Jabs made prior to the normal attacks have an attack bonus equal to the BAB of the first normal attack.

Cross: The Cross is the staple punch of the Pugilist and does 1d6 damage.
