Salvaged Weapon (spear). Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. or reach 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6+1) piercing damage or 5 (1d8+1) piercing damage if used with two hands.

Bonus Actions

Stench. As a bonus action, the troglodyte may emit a stench. Until the start of the troglodyte's next turn, any creature other than a troglodyte that comes within 5 feet of the troglodyte must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the start of the creature's next turn. On a successful saving throw, the creature is immune to the stench of all troglodytes for 1 hour. If the troglodyte uses Stench, the Scent Camouflage does not function until the start of the troglodyte's next turn.

Once in a while, a troglodyte will be be hatched that reverts to a less devolved state, called a Progen. These troglodytes are usually physically weaker than a standard troglodyte, but is much more intelligent. This intelligence has a number of benefits, one of which is the ability to learn additional languages (undercommon in the stat block, but may vary with individual).

It can also use weapons salvaged from other creatures with proficiency (the stat block above uses the spear, but swords, clubs, and other weapons may be substituted).

Another advantage gained is the ability to control its scent. The typical troglodyte emits a stench (see the Stench trait of the common troglodyte) continually. The Progen has learned to control it scent to the point that it can fool creatures that track primarily by smell. It can also mimic other scents, such as the smell of a fresh kill or campfire to lure prey into an ambush.

Troglodyte Progens do not usually rise to leadership of a troglodyte community, as troglodyte society values strength above intelligence. However, a clever progen can become a valued advisor to a troglodyte leader.
