Talk:Way of the Abundant Step (5e Monastic Tradition)

On Balance[edit]
The cost of Trick Of The Eye, which also requires Flurry Of Blows to be used first, means that even a Lv20 monk would not be able to sustain such a barrage of attacks for very long. With 20 ki, at 3 ki per round, it is less than 1 minute of such intense combat. This also means that, in order to even keep it up for all nine rounds (with 2 ki remaining), no other major ki feature can be used at any point. It also undoes Empty Body, forcing smarter positioning. It is a costly, aggressive option that is made even more costly if the monk chooses to burn through even more ki trying to use Stunning Strike.
Even with all this, does it still sound unbalanced? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Max7238 (talk • contribs) at
- The thing is that monks have a specific weak point; this lets them undo that weak point entirely. On top of that, most combats effectively only last 2-3 rounds, which means that they'll have it up for more than enough fights. Furthermore, ki points are regained on a short rest, meaning they can get them back pretty easily. Since this stops Empty Body from working, it'll cause monks to multiclass instead of getting it often, and that's enough to grab haste or something similar, pushing the damage even higher. Lastly, monks often grab Mobile, which means that they don't tend to have a problem with positioning due to their very high speeds. With all that in consideration, letting monks entirely bypass their weak point doesn't seem like good system design or balance. --Ghostwheel (talk) 02:31, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
