I'd like to playtest this to be sure, but all in all this seems lovely. Not only is it sort of like Pugilist, but it comes packed with fighting styles which differ one monk from another. It's not just "the guy with the 2d10 punch" anymore.

Balance

This isn't unquantifiable. It doesn't depend on other options or selections to determine its balance, everything you need to see where the feat falls is already right here.

It was listed as H before, and if that's where you want it there's a couple of things that could be toned down.

  • Change the order of abilities for Stone Palm: Stone Anchor, then Shatter, and then Immobilizing Palm. The penalties for Stone Anchor and Immobilizing Palm are much more manageable at that level.
  • Stone Anchor has an unlimited duration and has no method of getting free indicated. One should be added so it's not a forever lock (the entangled condition does not list an escape clause).
  • Update Immobilizing Palm to something like the following, so that it interacts better with Stone Anchor: "If the attack hits the target loses its dexterity bonus to AC and reflex saves, loses the benefits of evasion, and has their movement speed in all modes reduced to 0 until the end of their next turn. Targets with improved evasion are treated as if they only had evasion during this time. A successful fortitude save negates these penalties, but the target is still entangled as per Stone Anchor. The DC on this ability is based on it user highest ability score." I'd remove the encounter limits at that level as well.
  • Poisoned Chi is too good for the level. It's at least as good as wounding against a single target, better against multiple targets, and you get it earlier than wounding in the other chain. I'd drop con damage entirely and go with something like fatigued, dazzled, or some other minor status effect.
  • With a changed Poisoned Chi, Soul Chi needs some work as well. I'd allow them to target any of the mental stats and make it not stack with itself. Then let it apply to people multiple times in a round, so you can punch them up to 5 or 6 points before you move on to something else because you can't do much better.

And then there's a bit of weird.

  • Lion's Charge doesn't stack with pounce. You just gave them the ability to full-attack on a charge, and now you want them to choose between that and 1 attack with +1d6? It could probably be just a flat +1d6 damage on charges, since it's still behind lightning kick for damage in that range.

Hope something in there is helpful. - Tarkisflux Talk 20:51, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Applies many of your changes, thank you for the suggestion! For Poisoned Chi vs Wounding, wounding does not actually grant a save. I also decided for wisdom with soul venom since I don't think any creature actually lack a wisdom score. I will change the balance range as soon as I am sure it high. --Leziad 21:37, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Combining Styles[edit]

I was looking at this feat and a possibility occurred to me, could there be an option to take this feat multiple times to get the benefit of two different styles. Would it be to overpowered to get the special abilities of two or more styles and take the greater damage of the selected styles and any limitations (eg the foot only of Lightning Kick or the Awkward limits). As far as I can see the only styles which are completely incompatible are Iron Claw and Lightning Kick. I just love the idea of Iron Claw Serpent Style. Amdillae Talk 12:36, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

I say taking the feat twice would be enough. It should be balanced, so I say go for it. --Leziad (talk) 00:57, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
You could also split each style off into it's own feat, and grant a benefit to <something stacking> if you picked two or more styles. Then taking multiple styles is a bit more supported. - Tarkisflux Talk 03:54, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Kick Only[edit]

Is this supposed to only be a penalty? If not I'd recommend this line from the Monk class' Unarmed Strike "a monk may even make unarmed strikes with her hands full." Gazmer (talk) 18:23, 20 January 2017 (MST)
