It is very specific feat, with its viability depending both on the character and on the nature of the divine in the milieu.

Also note that as written it only affects divine spellcasting - turning, smites and other class features removed for ex-clerics/paladins/whatever would still be lost.

After some hesitance I've decided I like it, and I'm good with the reasoning that divine casters don't tend to pull a massive benefit from using arcane PrCs in general and the gimmicks it *does* open up are at best competitive with the gimmicks available to them at the same optimization point through divine PrCs. Were it the other way around, letting Arcane casters take Divine PrCs, that might be another matter. I'm still a little hesitant about bits of it (big "feel like I'm missing something" vibes) but overall I like the creativity this affords various builds.

In the past there was a semi-common houserule I would pull sometimes, switching one casting advancement for another. It was often magic into a psionic PrC or vice versa, but sometimes also an arcane/divine switch, like Archmage for clerics.

And you know what? It was ok. Turns out entering PrCs not designed for you usually results in non-synergizing powers, or that the base casting being advanced was the true font of your real ultimate power (and thus never changed).

With the fact that via WotC this was already possible (in a much more obtuse manner) so this simplifies the process, and that it opens new concepts without breaking anything (as practice has shown), this seems like a solid feat.

I'm opposed to the change in balance. While I'm fine with the divine focus part, being able to enter arcane PrCs is a HUGE game-changer. I think it's far better as unquant.


Can you explain the PrC concern? 'Cause I'm not seeing where it would be a problem with PrCs that have already been balance limited in a game. - Tarkisflux Talk 07:00, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

The tradeoff for clerics tends to be that they can access their ENTIRE spell list during any given day (as in, they can prepare whatever spells they want from whatever splatbooks they want for obvious reasons), but their PrCs tend to be more lackluster and don't have the raw power and versatility of arcane PrCs. OTOH, wizzies and sorcs have a far more limited available spell list to choose from (again, due to obvious reasons), but they tend to make up for it by having incredible PrCs whose versatility and raw power make them powerhouses even discounting the spells at their disposal. In short, it's a huge game-changer, since with this feat clerics can enter arcane-specific PrCs easily, which I don't think is a good thing. Plus it gives them too-easy access to full-BAB PrCs that arcane casters usually need to jump through hoops for. On top of that, I dislike the thematics of divine casters gaining arcane PrCs like this--that part is nowhere near as bad as the first part (since flavor is mutable). --Ghostwheel (talk) 08:44, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
What? Yeah but they don't synergize as well. Beside clerics already have full bab (hello divine power) like they would care for some half assed gish classes. The only really powerful wizard PrC on top of my head are the Incantrix (You can just DMM anyway), Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil (which is utterly broken to begin with) and that dancer broken metamagic class I forgot the name. These are all broken for a wizard anyway, so whatever it barely change a thing. Even if you went Abjurant Champion there barely any class synergy. Also you suffer from poorer bab and hit dice than cleric's own prestige class, as well as losing turn undead. So there still a tradeoff ALONGSIDE taking a feat to allow that. The balance level is almost irrelevant because all prestige classes have balance point anyway. --Leziad (talk) 09:41, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
