Talk:Mage Gunner (3.5e Alternate Class Feature)

Guns Ain't Cheap[edit]
considering even a max roll for starting gold for wizards and sorcerors would be about 120 gold, and the cheapest gun I found was the DMG pistol at 300, maybe you should add a feature that lets the character start with a pistol. They already let the samurai start with a pair of masterwork weapons, so you don't have to feel guilty.--Teh Storm 15:57, October 6, 2010 (UTC)
- Yes and no. I will not add such a feature because, quite frankly, it's not the class' power to somehow manifest a gun. However, you also made a small mistake due to misinformation; I don't play SRD. Together with crafting and regional economics (in my world, there's a whole state where there are no normal mages due to a calamity; they have all learned to use firearms for their magic, converting the matter of the bullet into energy to power their spells). Cheapest gun in that region is about 50gold, a normal flintlock pistol, which can be crafted for much less. A DM can very easily add such a rule on his own. Since it isn't a mechanical benefit (you wouldn't get the gun if you took the first level inside a dungeon for example), I do not list it as a class feature.--Soulblazer 87 16:12, October 6, 2010 (UTC)
- You could always just add it to the starting gold line (ie. xdy gold plus a flintlock pistol). --Andrew Arnott (talk, email) 18:11, October 6, 2010 (UTC)
- Precisely. After all, it's up to the DM to degree what the characters start with, regardless of what the PHB or any other book say. And we all know there are tons of ways to do that, even without simply calling it so; throwing people to prison for example.--Soulblazer 87 18:32, October 6, 2010 (UTC)

Where to start? Firstly, the herp-derp above shows that the author has no idea how to write something useful or balanced - and it shows. Secondly, this has the Ordained Champion targeting problem in spades. Lastly, it's just a straight-up sorc power-up. Honestly, not needed, not good, and basically not supported properly. |
