The idea of lobsters as a race is wonderful, but its the lobsterspeak which really sells this race. I love it! |
Good Idea, Bad Implementation
Could we get a playable, LA0 version of this (kind of like my raptor race)? I'd like to play a lobster. Surgo 21:51, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
- I might be persuaded, if I get an extension on my firewall assignment. - MisterSinister 21:52, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
- I'd like to work with this but it's so... lacking in flavor, I'm not sure where I'd bring it. From what I can tell they are just unusually large, intelligent lobsters with apparently randomly assigned stats. -- Eiji-kun 23:52, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
- I think flavor would probably come from a cultural writeup about lobsters similar to what was done for Sahuagin and stuff in Races of War. That would actually be really cool (because aside from that, how much could you really write about a lobster?) Surgo 00:43, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- Oh flip, I can't believe we still have this article! I could write all day about the noble and headstrong lobster! ...okay, maybe I couldn't, but lobsters certainly shouldn't lack in flavor, delicious butter drenched flavor. In fact, if Eiji feels up to the task of overhauling, I'd be happy to act as a sounding board. In fact, I'll do that now. I have previous experience writing a race that's seen as potential food by humanoids. --Ganteka Future 01:50, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- Do we have an actual adoption request then? Should we start the comment period? - Tarkisflux Talk 03:25, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Adoption[edit]
I hereby make a formal lobster adoption request. I have signed the Lobster Adoption Form, and have been found fit to adopt a lobster by the Lobster Adoption Committee. - 118.92.135.254 08:52, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Whoops, that's what I get for not checking my login status. - MisterSinister 08:53, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- Two week comment and objection period officially begins then. - Tarkisflux Talk 15:53, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- I've delivered a pile of concepts to Ganteka too, who also wanted his hands in it. -- Eiji-kun 20:21, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- That qualifies as an objection...
- Ganteka Future and MisterSinister are hereby notified that this will be decided by combat. The winner of a fight to the death wins the right to wait out the next two weeks until the adoption takes place, or gets shot down. FIGHT! - Tarkisflux Talk 20:27, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- If those two are so adamant about it, I'll just make my own variant and let them keep the 'official' lobster. - MisterSinister 20:29, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- Give Gan a bit to reply before you start on that please, but it's nice that you've offered to back off in that event. - Tarkisflux Talk 20:33, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- Reply! Okay, so I don't necessarily need to adopt the article, I was just interested in helping out on it is all as I'd like it to become a pretty awesome article. As a note, Eiji has emailed Salazar (the original author) about this article. I wish I could remember everything Eiji and I covered as far as potential racial traits and potential flavor. I guess I could just post a bunch of the stuff here as to what we covered in our brainstorming session.
- Brainstorming Notes:
- 1. Aim for LA 0. General class access. Open as possible. Medium aquatic magical beast.
- 2. 3 distinct racial "flavors": Ocean-deep lobsters, typical lobsters, land lobsters. Each with a minor flavor-based racial ability outside the core lobster traits. Deepsters got like blind fight or something and darkvision. Typical lobsters got a special Withdraw boost when in water. Landsters got climb and better land movement, worse swimming.
- 3.Basic traits by virtue of their shape, like stability. As well as some expansion based on their lobstery-ness. Primary claws that deal piercing/slashing/bludgeoning damage like a bite as well as being treated as armed. Secondary claws that function as hands but must use weapons for creatures of a size smaller (since they're smaller arms). Amphibious. Some bonus to grappling. Non-humanoid priced armor.
- 4. I don't remember what we covered for ability score modifiers. Might have been something like a boost to Constitution.
- 5. We may have briefly mentioned possibly allowing for enchantable/enhanceable bodies and claws.
- 6. Speak Common and Aquan. Possibly Undercommon instead for Deepsters.
- There was probably some other stuff I forgot to mention. So, in conclusion, I'd probably only write up an adopted version if no one else were to do it. That is, I don't need first pick on it. However, I will be rough but fair on whoever does write it up (for reasons of personal interest and quality assurance). There was a bunch of reasons to go with the stuff we came up with above, but I've forgotten that too. Never did come up with a fun-to-use racial ability. Oh well. --Ganteka Future 03:54, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- And from my memory, that's all pretty much right. Memory says it was -2 Dex +2 Con, and just further news on fluff. I was having the sea lobsters be normal, the land lobsters be more 'sturdy', and the deep lobsters be the cthulthu worshipers/drow/creepy potentially villianous albino lobsters of doom. If I recall their favored classes were ranger, fighter, and cleric respectively. Claws give grappling bonuses. And the rest is what he said. Take it, take it aaaaaaaaaaalllllllll!!!!!! -- Eiji-kun 04:36, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
- MS has bowed out (and yet again I am denied a fight to the death). While we're still waiting on community objection or word from Salazar, Eiji and Gan are currently in line to take it over. - Tarkisflux Talk 06:32, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Okay, so it only took me since... oh, great, 2011. I'm really on top of things apparently. So, I found my old notes (I actually managed to save the conversation I had with Eiji over brainstorming this). I trimmed it down and really limited the flavor to the bare basics, especially on the subraces, since I can't remember exactly the feel Eiji wanted for those. I may have gone overboard on the abilities, but most of them are situational, require skill investment or simply allow the race to function normally without being crippling to play. Also, I recall Eiji getting a reply from the original author okaying the adoption. That's about it. Enjoy read lobster. Sit fun. --Ganteka Future (talk) 00:46, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Overhaul & Authorship[edit]
Alright, the article has been adopted, but rather than merely becoming caretaker, I've totally overhauled it with the blessing of the original author. For this reason, both the original author (User:Salazar666) and my brainstorming partner for the project (User:Eiji-kun) have been moved to contributors for the article, with myself as the author, since this is such an extreme case of revision. --Ganteka Future (talk) 19:20, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
