An amusing variation on scry-or-die tactics I think.

It's a fun item for sure, but as written it seems troublesome to make good use of even if circumstances align perfectly.

I will assume that the dagger does not require additional time to travel to its intended target regardless of distance beyond the time it takes to perform the standard action. In that case, you need to be able to pinpoint your target, which may very well be on another continent across a few oceans, with a margin for error of no less than 50 feet. If you can guarantee the target's whereabouts so precisely, then you're probably scrying on him to begin with. On top of everything, you need to know the location, which probably requires having been there. That would generally put a bit of a damper on the intercontinental part of this thing.

Also, do buildings break line of effect? If so, he would need to be outside for it to work.

Finally, after all that, you're spending 10k to do a dagger worth of damage as a standard action, which won't kill anyone outright unless they are a simple commoner. Since you cannot manually control the dagger's flight path, it doesn't sound like something like Sneak Attack would apply, either. Sure, you can keep using the dagger over and over again, but that would destroy this thing's best feature, which is that it's a discreet way of killing that can't be traced back to you. You'd need to add expensive weapon qualities for this to be even remotely useful, I feel.

This is really dumb.

For Sulacu[edit]

You are correct on travel time, it's no more than throwing it normally and returns next round per Teleporting. The actual error range is 100 ft since it's a 50 ft radius but you would be correct that the ICBM function isn't relevant unless you know where to aim. You're either scrying, or you know something is happening in advance. My immediate concern was "what if you assassinate the king from another land?" but I figure if there is anyone who has an excuse to have protection against scrying, it'll be VIPs like the king so it should be ok. You'd be much better off trying to attack when you know he's in an area such as knowing they'll be in the arena making a speech.

A building does indeed block the dagger assuming there are no open windows, so that is the way to stop from being endlessly stabbed to death: get to cover and/or leave the area without them knowing you left.

As for sneak attack, it's actually intended but re-reading it I can see how it can be unclear. That part about being effectively an attack from 10 ft away was also intended for things such as sneak attack. It'll probably only occur the first time from surprise and you won't be able to flank from it except now you can, but there you go. I'll reword that in a sec.

Since it was so niche as a gimmick, the effective cost is just ~2000 for the ICBM part since the rest is normal weapon costs. It's potentially really strong, but the circumstances need to be in your favor. -- Eiji-kun (talk) 17:19, 25 October 2018 (MDT)
