Flavor: Not that my class articles are that much better, but this class is basically just a listing of combat abilities with a small amount of flavor attached.
Mechanics: Beyond a massive problem with Ace in the Hole, which I'll get to later, there are many issues with this class. At level 1 & 2, you are worse than pretty much any other class. Also the fact that dodge bonuses to AC stack makes Call have the potential to give silly amounts of AC when coupled with Superior Expertise. You won't be able to hit the broad side of a barn, but still goes off the RNG like crazy. Kicker is just strange. 50% chance for taking 10 to get a +1 bonus. That's just so little a bonus to need a coin flip for every take 10 action. Know when to fold em: I honestly don't know how to feel about this one. It seems incredibly strong, but the fact that you do need to fail a save does make it less enticing. Card counting: Just seems like it would slow down the game. Also substituting any possible roll is crazy broken, yo. It follows the same problem as Ace in the Hole (I'll get to it soon). Check: Who doesn't get the actions? The gambler? How long do the bonuses last? Pocket Pair: Needs clarification. Double Down: I guess this is meant to be used with Split? Otherwise, it should really be a standard action. Ace in the Hole: So, making a knowledge check is a free action. As in you can make as many as you want in a round. So what I can do is roll a finite, but arbitrarily large, number of d20s until I have, say 1000 20s come up. Then every d20 roll I make before my next turn will be a 20. Right before my turn, I'll make a crapton of knowledge checks (maybe try to know about the entire geneology of each member of a 10000 year old dynasty). I don't die and all is well. This also applies to card counting. I can make an arbitrarily large number of knowledge checks until 20 (or 1) is the least rolled number. Now my opponents will roll all 1s and me and my allies roll all 20s. |
