Unwieldy - below half reach means that a creature is attacking you from within your space, like a swarm. Is that by intent? Fending - feels way too complicated with all the various caveats. Needs simplification by a ton. Plus it feels like this gives a huge part of Polearm Master for free, and it doesn't really do anything either since you can still move 5 feet towards your enemy and take attacks freely. Finally, the bonus to AC is miniscule and goes against the philosophy of 5e where each bonus is actually meaningful. In short, I feel like this could use a lot more polishing before I would even consider using it at my table.
