Really great concept saddled with an unnecessarily complicated formula: instead of a feat that advances one or two class features, you get a feat that advances everything, but to get decent mileage out of it you have to take more than a few levels of the chosen class, which is a smart compromise. One of the best "gestalt-lite" feats I've seen.

5/3rds Compromise?[edit]

I'm honestly curious why the odd fraction. Seems like it would be a lot easier to say "one and a half times chosen class level" instead, which most people can do without the aid of pencil and paper. It's quicker, easier, and no one has to cross-multiply fractions.

Oh and btw, your math in the first example is wrong. 5/3rds of 8 barbarian levels is 13 (technically 13 and one-third), not 10. Spanambula (talk) 11:00, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

Heh -- I remember mulling over the numbers for this one for a while, but I can't remember exactly why I came up with 5/3. I'm not as concerned with a bit of math for things that happen during the level-up process (I'd be more concerned if this was something taking place every round). That being said, let's see what the feat can offer at different progression rates:
Levels in class 1.5x 5/3x 2x
2 3 3 4
3 4 5 6
4 6 6 8
5 7 8 10
6 9 10 12
7 10 11 14
8 12 13 16
9 13 15 18
10 15 16 20
11 16 18 22
12 18 20 24
Okay. I think I remember now. So I wanted this feat to be something like a pseudo-gestalt. If you take the feat twice, at level 20 you can have the effective abilities of two classes at level 16, which is pretty neat. With 1.5x it is two classes at level 15, which actually isn't all that different, so it probably is better. The 2x rate also seems interesting and I think I may change it to that. The hard cap of HD - 4 is the bigger limiter already. But after looking at it, 1.5x is best. Thanks for the comments :). --Aarnott (talk) 14:02, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
You're welcome, though looking at your chart I wonder if I shouldn't have just kept my mouth shut and avoided a mild nerf to a feat that I want to use in a build I'm working on. :P Spanambula (talk) 23:10, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
