The Broadsword is similar to a longsword in lenght, since it typically features a double-edged blade and a cruciform hilt; however, as the name suggests, the Broadsword has a wider and heavier blade wich enhances the cutting capacity of the weapon over the trhusting thrusting attitude. For that reason, its blade has edges running parallel most of the sword lenght, except for the tip, and even the tip of the sword is broader and more spatulate than the tip of a longsword.
The broadsword Broadsword usually has a basket hilt to protect the wielder’s hand, but some are made without the basket hilt.
The Broadsword is often used by specialized troops, usually cavalry soldiers, to deliver powerful blows and massacre enemies.
A broadsword is too large to use in one hand without special training; thus, it is an exotic weapon. However, it's not as long and heavy a bastard sword, so a charachter character with 12 of strenght (instead of 13) can get the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat for a broadsword suited for him. A character without the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat can use a broadsword two-handed as a martial weapon, or one-handed with a penalty of -2. With an extra requirement of +5 gp (for a total cost of 25, for medium characters) a Broadsword features a more elaborated cross-guard and balancing, so it allows the following property: except for proficiency, feats and abilities which effect the Longsword also effect the Broadsword (characters proficient with the Longsword are also proficient with the Broadsword for purposes of any of the following feats: Greater Weapon Focus, Greater Weapon Specialization, Improved Critical, Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization).
