In 4th edition, there are five major dragon families: catastrophic, chromatic, metallic, planar and scourge.<ref>http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4ex/20081020b</ref> Chromatic dragons are presented in the ''Monster Manual'' and ''Draconomicon I'' and planar dragons are presented in ''Draconomicon I''.
In 5th edition, dragons were reverted into just two classifications — chromatic and metallic. Chromatic dragons are of evil alignment and metallic are of good alignment. Given age categories are Ancient, Adult, Young, and Wyrmling.<ref name="srd5">[[SRD5]] 5th ed. System Reference Document</ref>
