:I agree with the fact that this variant doesn't do anything to weaken spellcasting in general, but weakening spells is not the purpose of this article. The best way I can think of describing what I had in mind is turning a modern handgun into a blunderbuss. Both'll still kill you, but the blunderbuss will need time to reload. Mages can no longer go in guns blazing with a succession of five 9th-level spells with a half-dozen protective buffs cast in preparation. It forces mages to choose to either focus on dealing damage, ''or'' controlling the battlefield, ''or'' providing defensive buffs for themselves and the party.
