Sap of Death[edit]

The Sap of Death uses the Functional Weapons of Legacy variant rule.

Sap of Death
Price: 2001 gp
Body Slot: Held
Caster Level: 20th
Aura: Strong Universal (DC 30)
Activation: See Text
Weight: 2 lb

This simple looking sap has a small stylized skull illustrated on the outside. It's not very intimidating at all, but this is where you'd be wrong...

They say the sap of death was once a normal sap, wielded by the most passive of pacifists. This man was known as a saint the world over, and so he went around helping others, curing disease, and saving the world. As he aged, he knew he would have to do something with a lasting impact, something that could save everyone. And so he set out to forge an epic spell which would render, ever so slightly, everyone in the world to lean towards peace. Though some had questions about the ethics of altering things like this on such a grand scale, all saw benefits in it. And so the plan was brought forth, and everyone was a little more peaceful.

But for someone like this pacifist of legend, a man who was defined by the notion of peace, he could not get any more peaceful. And so the magic rolled over the scale one more tick, transforming the man into the most violent and evil being in existence.

After a long and bloody war, the pacifist was finally put down and everyone agreed never to try this again, breaking the peace-emitting devices he had created. Yet in his moment of madness his ability for destruction seemed to pass down to his items, including the only weapon he ever used, a simple sap.

The Sap of Death is a weapon of legacy sap which has none-the-less caused many fatalities. It starts out as a +1 sap that deals a damage size higher (1d8 for medium) against evil creatures. As various rituals are made and power is gained, the weapon starts taking on stronger powers. There are five rituals that are performed, they must be performed in order (the 2nd ritual must be completed before you start the 3rd, even if you achieve the 3rd level pre-requisites). Rituals cost gold (in the form of feeding the weapon raw materials) and xp, with an additional pre-requisite. Once the 1st level ritual is unlocked, the weapon displays its omen effect. You can take time out and spend 8 hours bringing the weapon to the next level once you have the pre-requisites.

The Sap of Death is a unique magic item, on its way to becoming an artifact. While it has a price, it cannot be completely destroyed. If reduced to 0 hp, it instead falls inert in a broken condition, and unable to be used until repaired, but is not destroyed as items usually are. It is treated as an artifact against the effects of mage's disjunction.

Omen: When making a blow that knocks the target unconscious or kills them, a phantasmal specter of death if briefly seen floating over the target.

1st Ritual (Beat Down Evil)[edit]

Detect Morality: The user is able to cast any of the detect alignment spells as spell-like abilities at will.

Nonlethal Focus: As long as the sap of death is in hand, any damage you do you can choose to deal as non-lethal damage, including spells and other weapons.

Smite Evil: You gain smite evil as a paladin of your level. If you already have smite evil, you count as if your level was your level +5.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +3 or Heal 6 ranks, must knock a creature unconscious as the finishing blow, who then dies within 1 minute after (by any means).

Cost: 2000 gp, 80 xp

2nd Ritual (Just Death)[edit]

Daunting Strike: As a standard action you can make a single attack. In addition to normal damage, you apply 1 daunt level.

Life End: If you knock a creature unconscious with the sap of death to the point where the creature would die were it lethal damage instead, you can activate this ability as a free action. The creature will die by some unrelated and sudden circumstance, from something as simple as the creature falling down and snapping its neck on impact to as far fetched as a sudden meteor strike exact at that time. For the purpose of interacting with feats and other abilities (except for Sap of Death pre-requisites), this does not count as a kill on your part, allowing you to retain things such as a Vow of Peace.

Nonlethal Drain: Whenever you deal nonlethal damage, you heal an half the amount of nonlethal damage as you dealt.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +6 or Heal 9 ranks, must take down an opponent entirely with non-lethal damage and no lethal damage.

Cost: 8000 gp, 320 xp

3rd Ritual (Act of God)[edit]

Ludicrous Gibs: Whenever you kill a creature with the sap of death (typically via Life End), you can choose to employ the effect of ludicrous gibs enhancement, ensuring the body is in a poor state of repair.

Strange Turnabout: As a standard action you can make a normal attack, and force a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 HD + your highest mental ability score). On a failed save, the creature is afflicted by a random bit of bad luck, a minor form of Life End, which can cause any of the following status effects.

  • Blinded for 1 round.
  • Confused for 1 round.
  • Deafened for 5 rounds.
  • Shaken for 5 rounds.
  • Sickened for 5 rounds.
  • Slow for 1 round.

Universal Nonlethal: You may now deal nonlethal damage to any creature, even those that would normally be immune. These creatures can cure the nonlethal damage the same way they cure lethal damage, and recover all nonlethal damage after 24 hours of rest. Notably, this also opens them up to destruction via Life End.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +9 or Heal 12 ranks, must knock an opponent out who, in the act of knocking them out leads them directly to dying (such as by falling off a cliff, being unable to escape a burning fire, or drowning) within 1 minute of passing out. Your allies cannot be the result of the death, it must be by circumstance alone.

Cost: 18,000 gp, 720 xp

4th Ritual (Life and Death)[edit]

Death Strike: The sap of death effectively has the Vorpal enhancement, except it is a [Death] effect and is the result of their life force abruptly leaving their body. In spite of causing death, you are still not considered to be the cause of death as per Life End.

Improved Daunting Strike: When you use your daunting strike ability, you now deal 1d4 daunt levels instead of 1.

Life for a Life: When you kill a creature with your sap of death, you can revive one ally within 100 ft as if you cast raise dead on them, so long as they died within 1 minute and your opponent is at least the target's CR -4 or higher. This does not cause any components, though they still take the negative level for revival.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +12 or Heal 15 ranks, must stagger a creature via daunt levels of at least your CR -4.

Cost: 32,000 gp, 1280 xp

5th Ritual (Judge of Death)[edit]

Catastrophic Circumstance: As a 1 round action you can wave your sap in the air and cause a catastrophe to occur. Treat it as minor wish spell, where the effect produce it caused by unlikely circumstance, not unlike Life End. You may use this ability 1/encounter, and it can be only used when you are in actual danger.

Alternatively, you can reproduce the effect of wish 1/week, but you pay all the costs involved and the sap of death goes inert for that time, acting as a sap with non of the rituals unlocked.

Death and Rebirth: Whenever your sap of death would kill a creature, you can choose to offer them atonement. At that moment they briefly experience death, the afterlife, and their life flashes before their eyes. They can choose to switch to within one step of the wielder's alignment (at which point they are left with 1 hp with daunt levels equal to their character level), or die as normal.

Soulbind: The sap of death now acts as if it was made out of thinaunCW. This can also prevent respawning techniques, such as a lich or ghost respawn, as you seal the soul inside of the sap itself. It also has the effect of thinaun fiber armor as long as the sap of death is on your person.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +15 or Heal 18 ranks, must have successfully activated the Death Strike ability of the sap at least once.

Cost: 50,000 gp, 2000 xp

Prerequisites: N/A.
Cost to Create: Unique item, cannot be created.
