Plumwood[edit]

A pleasant smelling wood with the odor of sweet fruit. Plumwood is the generic name for any sweet smelling wood that maintains its pleasant smell when cut, treated, and worked. Because of this, Plumwood can be any of a variety of materials (such as rosewood, peachwood, cherrywood, etc). Mechanically, these are all identical, but the scent they give off differs. Plumwoods can be either hard or soft depending on the particular wood used, so can be used in place of metal for armor or weapons.

All Plumwood equipment counts as a masterwork skill tool for Bluff and Diplomacy against any creature with a scent of smell. Additionally, it makes any creature bearing it easier to track by scent (doubling the range at which scent applies and giving a +2 circumstance bonus to Survival checks to track) in areas that do not have that type of Plumwood native. In areas that that type of Plumwood is native, it is impossible to track a creature bearing a Plumwood item by scent. Vermin and swarms - even those that do not eat fruit - are attracted to the smell of Plumwood and target living creatures bearing Plumwood more vigorously, dealing +1 damage per die and increasing any save DCs from swarms (such as from distraction or poison) by +2 while it is worn or carried.

Creatures struck by Plumwood weapons are lightly perfumed and are targeted as if they were wearing Plumwood by Vermin and swarms for 1 round. Additionally, holding a Plumwood item and fighting defensively or taking a total defense allows you to waft the scent directly to your nose (or other olfactory organ) and allows you to get a +2 bonus (if fighting defensively) or immunity (if taking a total defense) on saves vs any stench effects (such as from a troglodyte). Plumwood shields are priced as weapons.

Plumwood armors render you immune to stench effects and effects which would change your smell.

Plumwood is no more difficult to work than other wood, but due to legal restrictions from the Woodworker's Guild, any non-masterwork Plumwood item is heavily taxed, so it is cheaper to just get a masterwork version instead. The cost of a masterwork item is therefore included below. Plumwood has 10 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 5.

Type of Plumwood Item Item Cost Modifier
Ammunition +10 gp + 50gp/lb
Armor +750 gp
Weapon +500 gp
Other Items +50 gp/lb
