A sticky sphere of organic gel drifts in front of you, its surface bubbling with alien shapes of things not quite living borne within its flesh. From its cloudy muscus-lined core is birthed a fractal array of strange "spiders", with long necks topped with red-orange crystals sitting atop 6 impossibly spindly legs. They begin to converge on your position.
A thing which is said to come from the plane of dreams, they are rarely spotted were it not for their rare incursion into the much closer ethereal plane. These things appear to be mindless hungry predators which some have described as oversized microbes. Its main body is little more than a ball of ectoplasm which drifts under unknown means, while its surface constantly spawns an endless array of "scales", strange entities with prism-like heads atop long spiraling necks, and six spidery legs. These scales are the core's means of hunting, observing, and defense as they actively seek out nearby prey and harvest them for parts with which to make more of their kind, and more bulk for their resident core.
It's said that a well-fed oneirovira will bloat in size until huge, then eventually split into two or three of its kind which drift away from each other. Oneiroviras eat, but do not seem to sleep or breathe.
Combat[edit]
As mindless creatures, they lack much for tactics, but have some instinctual patterns. An oneirovira core only attacks when hungry, which is unfortunately often, otherwise it ignores creatures and drifts randomly. If attacked or if hunting, it begins to release scales until the problem is handled. They mindlessly use their psi-like abilities to buff their minions, as the core rarely becomes an active aggressor. Instead, it uses its force spikes only when approached itself.
If the core is defeated, the scales cease hostilities and disperse within 1d4 rounds in search for a new core to join.
Cannibalise (Ex): Oneirovira scales are ravenous, and eat their own dead. A scale can pass over the corpse of a fallen scale as difficult terrain, automatically consuming it on the way. Whenever they consume one of their own, they heal 10 hp and gain a +2 alchemical bonus to all d20 rolls for 1 round.
Convert (Ex): Oneirovira scales only deal tiny amounts of physical damage with their bite, but those bitten take on 1d3 points of "corruption". It works identically to bleedout, except the creature need not have blood (though it must still have a Con score), and on "bleedout", they do not lose 20% of their maximum hp. Instead, they become 20% unreal, as if a victim of shadowfade sickness, it spawns a new scale randomly within 60 ft, and the core gains 5 temporary hp which stack. This unreality stacks with itself and shadowfade sickness. If the creature fades out entirely, 1d3+1 new scales appear and 1d3+1 x5 temporary hp are added.
Through this method, an oneirovira can exceed the number of active scales available to it. However, it still does not replenish them until the triggers are met (see Scaling).
Death Throes (Ex): Oneirovira scales explode in a burst of dreamlike haze. This gas fills a 5-ft square as well as affecting any adjacent creature that struck the killing blow. The gas inflicts shadowfade sickness (DC 20) with its normal incubation time. The gas lasts for 1 round before vanishing.
Engulf (Ex): The oneirovira core can attempt to move into a creature's space, provoking an attack of opportunity, or a chance to make a DC 20 Reflex save to move into the nearest empty square. Those which choose not to or fail to move out of the way are subject to Sticky Body. The save DC is Constitution-based.
If it starts its turn with a living creature stuck to it, it attempts to swallow the target. This is a grapple, though it does not leave the core grappled itself. At the start of the creature's turn, the engulfed creature automatically takes force spikes damage. The core can swallow up to 1 Large, 4 Medium, 16 Small, 64 Tiny, or 256 Diminutive or smaller creatures at once.
Creatures killed by engulfing vanish as if affected by shadowfade sickness and give the core 5 temporary hp which stack.
Force Spikes (Ex): The oneirovira core attacks with extradimensional spikes it forces from its body as a natural weapon. It can only make a single attack with force spikes which deal 1d6 force damage plus Strength and a half, but the attack hits all squares in reach.
Immunities: Both the oneirovira scales and core have the same immunities. They are immune to critical hits, flanking, sneak attacks, disease, paralysis, poison, polymorphing, and stunning as well as all mind-affecting effects due to being mindless, and immunity to gaze attacks, illusions, or other visual effects due to being blind.
Psi-Like Abilities (Ps): The oneirovira core has the following psi-like abilities. At will- psionic leash (DC 17). Manifester level 6th. The save DC is Charisma based.
Psycho Aura (Su): The oneirovira core adds its Charisma to its AC as a deflection bonus. In addition, it provides a passive buff to any scales within 100 ft based on how many scales are active at the time. The more scales there are, the more the bonus depletes.
Number of Scales | Insight Bonus to Attack, Damage, AC, and Saves |
---|---|
1-3 | +3 |
4-6 | +2 |
7-9 | +1 |
10+ | +0 |
Scaling (Ex): The oneirovira core can produce 1d8 scales as a standard action. Scales appear in any space within its reach and act immediately. It almost always does so when it has 3 or fewer scales active. As a result, it can have a maximum of 11 scales active at once normally (but see Convert).
Sticky Body (Ex): The oneirovira core is a sticky glob of ectoplasm. Melee attacks and grapples against it must make a DC 20 Reflex save or become stuck to its surface, though it still deals damage. You can wrest your weapon free with an opposed Strength check as a move action. Stuck creatures are subject to Engulf. The save DC is Constitution based.
It is considered to be made out of ectoplasm for the purpose of powers such as dismiss ectoplasm, except it may be shifted to the plane of dreams instead of the astral realm.
