This stony charred headpiece looks like a tiara, but it fits over the eyes, blinding the user. Set into the inside churns a warm vicious black substance which seems to twitch organically and of it's own will. Stare into this abyss, and you may find things staring back at you.
When this mask is donned, your normal vision is blinded and you gain a distorted view of the world as if using dark insight to witness the warped plane. You make a dark insight check with a +5 bonus, with a minimum result of 20% reality within the warped plane. You can see terrain as normal (given the changes with the warped plane) but creatures in the real world are invisible to you unless they also have a dark insight score. Witnessing the warped plane via this mask does not provoke granting you dark insight.
Wearing the mask is taxing. Every 10 minutes you wear it you must make a DC 10 Wisdom check or become fatigued. The DC rises by +2 each time. If you are fatigued and fail the check, you become exhausted. If you are exhausted and fail the check, your Wisdom score drops to 0, which you recover naturally. The DC and effects are reset once you do not wear the mask for 24 hours.
You may also use the mask to peer into the myriad streams of time and space. This duplicates the effect of contact other plane 1/week.
When encountering a situation where you would gain dark insight, you gain a +5 bonus on saves against it. Even if you fail, you can choose not to accept the dark insight. The distortion is stored within the mask.
If the mask ever reaches 20 stored dark insight levels, its nature changes. The mask becomes cursed and bonds to the wearer, unable to be removed without first casting remove curse. They are pursued by pseudonaturalCA creatures only the mask wearer can see and interact with, randomly summoning a encounter equal to the target's own CR once per day. If the user is slain by these pseudonatural opponents, their body erupts into tentacles and they are dragged away into the Far Realm.
And the worst part is that masks rarely come empty. When finding a mask of the abyss, roll 1d20-1. That is how many stored dark insight are currently on the mask, a number the wearer cannot identify short of 7th level or higher magic. Likewise, the stored dark insight can be reduced by 1d4+1 with a limited wish, or completely with a wish or miracle.
Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, bestow curse, contact other plane, must have a dark insight score.
