You open the map and see that you're on the bottom floor of the castle. Clearly, the bathroom is ahead and to the left.
A map of location is keyed to a specific location (such as a map of a city or a castle). As long as you are in the location depicted on the map, a red circle saying YOU ARE HERE is displayed on the map surface, indicating your position. When out of range, it shows a question mark instead.
Clearly the more detailed and zoomed in a map is, the more accurate it is for finding your location. Wondrous architecture versions (500 gp) held immobile inside pillars are often used to help creatures find themselves.
