Lugaru[edit]
Former feyblooded wolf-like warriors originally from the forest, their behaviors split ties with their own kin and they were ejected into the world of civilization. Unfortunately for the fey, civilization suited them and soon, destruction.
Such is supposedly the legend of how the lugaru were formed. For once they were fey, wolf spirits of great size who could speak and whose hunts were legendary events which cleared entire forests of overpopulation, resetting the natural balance of the world. The lugaru reveled in their status of predator, and all was well.
But it came to pass that one day a strange animal came to the borders of the forest in great number, who carried strange tools and sticks of thunder. Not only were they superior predators that the lugaru, they were a threat to the lugaru themselves. The forest made war upon these bipedal interlopers with the lugaru leading the charge, but it came to pass that one day an injured lugaru was brought to the great predator and was shown surprising mercy. It was nursed to health, fed, and ultimately released. It was a minor act of kindness, but it was one which spread rumors through the ranks of their kind that the great enemy was not what they had seen. With their strange tools they brought miracles of healing and shelter, where the forest had none. It was comforting. The lugaru desired it, and soon defectors appeared until the war was lost and the fey had to retreat into their hidden fairy circles.
For this betrayal, the fey overlords decreased that if the lugaru were so fond of the trappings of civilization so much, that they could assume the forms of their former enemy and never be welcome among the fey again. And so the lugaru took the shape of man, but with the mannerisms of beast. In this state they could not be seen as pets to be tamed, but rather strange beings. They were separated from man, but they still coveted what man had. And so through trade, theft, war, and eventually their own willpower they began to build a civilization of their own.
The fey were not forgotten though, and even now the lugaru's rapid industrialization serves more than to empower their people. It is a weapon of revenge, one which will eventually swallow the forests and leave the fey homeless and barren.
Personality[edit]
Lugaru personality varies, but the traits often associated with canines (especially wolves) are found within them. They often have a pack mentality, following the whims of the local alpha. They have strong familial bonds, concepts of love, loyalty, and a fierce aggression when provoked. And they have a love of the hunt, the thrill of battle, and a fearlessness even in the face of defeat. And in spite of what the legends tell, the lugaru do not hate nature, at least not intentionally. But they do see nature as an element to be used, harvested, domesticated, and dominated to their will. No element of their former fey origins remain.
Physical Description[edit]
The lugaru are anthromorphic wolves, covered in earthtone or gray fur, with a canine head, ears, and tail, but largely humanoid frame. Eye colors vary greatly, with common hues being yellows, oranges, and blues. Those which assume the role of alpha for a long time sometimes exhibit physical changes resulting in larger overall bodies, small horn-like protrusions on the body, and solid color eyes. It seems to imply that they adopt certain roles and are altered by it through the release of chemical scent triggers to optimize themselves for their role.
Relations[edit]
The lugaru are an aggressive species, and understand (if not actually get along) with other violent beings like humans and orcs. The long and careless lives of elves and gnomes remind them too much of the fey, and halflings often seem lazy. They respect the dwarves and their work ethic, but seek to outpace them and their glacial progress by being more open to new ideas of progress and experimentation. Ironically this places them in direct rivalry with the humans they once, in legend, idealized.
Alignment[edit]
Lugarus can be of any alignment, for while the pack society tends towards lawful behavior, they are encouraged not to get caught up in simple tradition.
Lands[edit]
The lugaru make their homes upon plains and mountains, especially where natural resources can be harvested and employed to their needs.
Religion[edit]
The lugaru usually worship gods of progress, technology, commerce, and war.
Language[edit]
Lugaru speak Common and a dialect of Sylven. They retain the old tongue as a means of both understanding their ancient foes, and simply as a matter of old habit.
Names[edit]
Lugaru usually have their last names act descriptive of the family history, such as Ironclaw or Trackseeker, while first names could be nearly anything suitable for a human. It is said that if an individual performs a great act, they are honored with the ability to change their last name to fit their new achievement.
