FTL Engines are required for any ship expecting travel between systems, or even within a solar system, in any reasonable time. It slips your vessel into the aether, where effective speeds are multiplied tremendously and the normal limitations of the material plane do not apply. FTL Engines take an amount of time to charge, as well as calculations to make sure you arrive to your destination successfully. For this reason most travel established routes which have most of the calculations completed for travelers, who merely need to input the correct data points.
The basic FTL engine requires at least 1 minute to charge from no charge to ready to jump. A destroyed FTL engine which holds charge is potentially dangerous for its vessel, as that energy will go somewhere, and rarely does it go anywhere safe. Some vessels are prepared to eject their FTL module specifically to avoid this situation.
FTL Engines require a reactor. Simple vessel basic power is insufficient.
