Dying, Variant[edit]

In fiction and storytelling there is quite an emphasis on dying, from last words to a villain slowly bleeding out and unable to act on their demise. Alas in the rules of both 3.5e and Pathfinder, a creature that reaches 0 hit points always falls unconscious. This variant rule is designed to address the situation with minimal change in combat dynamic. It does add a few more options to a dying character, such as activating a self-destruct device or slowly attempting to crawl away.

When a character is brought under 0 hit points and start dying she become crippled instead of unconscious. The character still loses hit points if it is not stabilized.

Crippled[edit]

A crippled character is unable to take any strenuous action, she may talk at low volume, take casual mental action or push a button at most. By example, a crippled character cannot activate a magic item on themselves or drink a potion. At the start of each of it turn or whenever it takes damage, a crippled character must make a Fortitude save equal to 10 + the amount of hit point she is below 0 or fall unconscious. A crippled character is considered helpless. A crippled character may crawl 5-ft as a full-round action, which provokes an attack of opportunity.
