It was massive and majestic, something akin to a blue whale on land supported by six elephant like clawed stumps and a pinecone-like tail covered in crude spines. Its head was dominated by a massive scoop of a mouth, and along its rocky sides were a multitude of vents which seemed to bleed a fine sand. A shovel-shaped bony plate rises from its lower jaw like some kind of organic steam shovel.
Best described as some manner of land-whale, these creatures are more commonly known as Desert Whales. They live in certain strange deserts moving through the sand with all the ease as if it were water and filtering out the sand of insects and precious materials which are run through its gullet. Within the esophagus and beyond matter is pummeled and chemically and physically sorted, with waste material bleed out out of its sides and tail. They can dive quite deep in sand, clay, or soil and even dive to bedrock where their powerful underjaw scrapes away at the surface, slowly eroding it into more sand. Yet like their bedbound cousins, these creatures are air-breathing mammals and do require oxygen at some point.
In spite of their intimidating size and strength, these creatures are no threat to humanoids under most cases. They only consume insects and rocks and their throats are too small to swallow a creature before they arrive at the more dangerous crushing portion of their gullet. Due to both size and environment, they have very few if any predators.
Desert Whales are between 30 and 60 ft long and move slowly, but are surprisingly fast when provoked. Due to their feeding habits they often leave behind strange veins of ore in their wake as the materials are purified.
Combat[edit]
These massive creatures are surprisingly gentle. If harassed or provoked, they are as likely to flee as they are to retaliate.
Blowout (Ex): In an emergency a desert whale can evacuate the contents of its body violent, spraying sand and dust in the air in all direction in a massive dust cloud as a standard action. All creatures within 60 ft are subject to gust of wind (caster level equal to HD), as well as 2d8 points of nonlethal damage from abrasion. It leaves behind an effect similar to obscuring mist up to 5 minutes before settling. A DC 22 Reflex save halves the damage and negates the other effects of gust of wind. The save DC is Constitution based. Desert whales are loath to do this, as it effectively leaves them starving and unable to use it again until well fed.
Hold Breath (Ex): A desert whale can hold its breath for a number of rounds equal to 8 x its Constitution score before it risks suffocating. If it is not in combat it can last for minutes instead of rounds, or hours if sleeping or otherwise resting.
