Anymancy[edit]

As a simple and rapid tool to create minor magic schools you may use the following rules: pick any magical descriptor (such as Darkness, Fire, Fear, Acid and so on), select one theme (such as Hydromancy) and create a spell list based on that theme. It will have only spells from the descriptor(s) you choose (in this case Water) and spells from related cleric domains. You may select more descriptors at once (for example, Darkness and Water may be used to create Deepmancy, or something like that).

Treat this school as any other school, allowing wizard to specialize in it (sacrificing one or two schools, depending on the theme and on the number and flexibility of spells, obviously saving spells with that descriptor(s), regardless of their school). Also, feats that empowers spells of specific schools may be used for your school.

You may make the same thing with one or more subschools, but the list will be very limited.

The True Anymancer[edit]

To make a character completely focused on the minor school or theme you created, you may follow these rules to avoid having to create an entirely new class: pick any spellcasting class and substitutes its normal spells list with the spells list made for your theme.

In addition, it should cast anymancy spells at caster level +1, and add +1 to the DC of anymancy spells it casts (it has the Spell Focus feat for the anymancy school). Alternatively you may give it the Spell Focus Improved feat for this school.

It gains one extra prepared spell or spell slot per spell level (as a specialist wizard) and +2 to Knowledge and Spellcraft checks involving anymancy.

Be aware that you may adapt spell levels for minor spellcasters (such as bards) and partial spellcasters (such as paladins and rangers).

In alternative, you may use the generic spellcaster from Unearthed Arcana as base. You may want to add more skills and/or skill points, another good save or increase the hit die from a d4 to a d6, because your choice of spells will be very limited and you wont't get the full list of a base class. Treat spells that appear on multiple spells lists at different levels as the lowest level of them.

If the ending result is a small spell list, consider giving the anymancer a spellcasting method similar to that of a dread necromancer[1] or a beguiler[2].
