The screeching horror looked like a pale-skinned man who crawled belly upward on all fours, its head twisted around painfully with a maw of needle-like teeth and glistening blank red eyes. Instead of arms and legs, sharped blades of metallic bone supported the creature, making an omnious clicking noise as it scurries around like a hunger-crazed beast.
The daggerling, also known as a sicarii, are lawful evil outsiders found on Acheron admists the bloodied battlefields of a thousand wars. They are born from the souls of those who lived off others efforts, using mob mentality to give their lifestyle political security. Though they have mostly human faces, they are little more than opportunistic scavengers which look for the recently dead and wounded, devouring them en masse. Always starving (even though as outsiders they have no need to eat), they hunt after living healthy targets when food is scarce in great packs, using surprisingly clever tactics for an otherwise dull-witted creature, using its telepathy to syncronize attacks with others, flanking, and using cover and stealth to make ambushes.
They are one of the lowest forms of menos fiends, lower planar beasts who have a disruptive effect on magic. A daggerling is about 1 and a half feet at the shoulder and weigh 20 lbs.
Daggerlings cannot speak, only screech, but they understand Abyssal, Celestial, and Infernal.
Combat[edit]
Daggerlings attack with all four of its limb claws in one blow. The blades are weak and do not cause much damage, but in groups they become powerful, aiding each other with Douse the Flames and Leading the Attack, flanking, and restoring any damage taken with Life Drain. In sufficient numbers they take turns moving in and out of range to destroy the enemy with a thousand papercuts. If outnumbered, a daggerling is cowardly and will try to ambush or get its victims to follow it into a much stronger encounter.
Disruptive Field (Ex): An aura which radiates in a 30-foot radius out from the menos disrupts the flow of magic, psionics, and any other spell or spell-like ability. Any attempts to cast within one must succeed on a caster level check DC 5 + the creature's HD or be unable to cast (the action is lost, but the spell however is not lost). It is not an antimagic field, and so magical effects originating from outside the field can still get in.
Extraordinary Health (Ex): A menos always receives maximum hit points per hit die.
Hinder Magic (Ex): All magical damage or healing is hindered by 50%.
Life Drain (Ex): Any successful attack against a living creature deals at least +1 extra damage (already accounted for), which is absorbed as 1 point of healing per attack.
Maneuver-Like Abilities (Ex): creeping shadow (rush), dancing ribbon strike (DC 14, strike), flexible strike (strike), inertial focus (stance)
Smell Magic (Su): Daggerlings have scent against anything which would show up with detect magic and may spend three rounds studying the scent to gain information as per the spell.
