Paragon Exoskeleton[edit]

In the cold darkness of the distant future, the illithid empire was beset by a force they could not handle, and in desperation pulled off a risky gambit to draw their empire back into the past. During the transition, much of their power and knowledge was lost and scattered, but fragments of the time's technology and magic remain hidden away. One such artifact from this future-to-be was the paragon exoskeleton, though it is not certain if it is of illithid creation or a relic from the unnamed opponents they faced. What is known is that it is a potent battle armor able to increase the abilities of any who wear it. Their discovery is invaluable, for the knowledge of creating these devices has not yet been discovered.

A minor artifact, the paragon exoskeleton is a suit which takes up the users body slot. It appears as a black mesh of tightly knit muscle fibers, black stone-like skeletal support, and matte gray hexagonal plates which tessellate into new forms at a whim. Pulses of light run across its surface emanating from the glowing power core in its chest when the suit is active. The hexagonal plates which surround the suit float just off its surface and seem to flow freely, sometimes vanishing between spaces and adding or subtracting mass at a whim. Around the forearms and legs, barrel-like gauntlets and greaves made of spinning gears seem to help control the energy supply of the suit.

The suit can adapt to the size of the user, and can take on the form of any suit of armor (or even non-armor) that the user is proficient with. The armor is self supporting and effectively weightless, does not reduce speed for medium and heavy armor, the armor check penalty is reduced by 5 and the maximum Dex increases by 3. While worn, the user gains the following benefits:

  • Climbing Irons (Ex): The user gains a climb speed equal to their land speed.
  • Combat Augmentation (Ex): The user gains a +6 bonus to all ability scores.
  • Fast Healing 5 (Ex): Medical functions of the suit keep the user constantly recovering.
  • Force Field (Su): The user gains 5 temporary hp per level, which recovers in full 1 minute after being damaged.
  • Force Shutdown (Ex): As a non-action, the user of the suit can command the suit to shut down and lock up, immobilizing them but not leaving them helpless. In this state, their universal damage reduction and fast healing triple, but they cannot move or take any actions other than mental actions, or to turn the suit back on. Turning the suit back on takes 5 rounds. At the end of the 5th round, any mental charms and compulsions the user was under are purged. This function appears to be done in the event that the user loses control, such as falling victim of mind-control. Its also useful as a quick regeneration system.
  • Hasted Momentum (Su): The user is constantly under haste, and retains momentum when traveling in a straight line. As long as the user continues in a straight line, they retain speed from the previous round. For example a creature moves 120 ft overall in the first round, next round it moves 240 ft, then 360 ft, then 480 ft, up to a maximum speed of 6000 ft overall per round (about 618 mph). Beware though, that moving beyond your normal speed incurs fall damage if you ever come to a sudden stop by running into an object, to a maximum of 20d6.
  • Jump Boosters (Ex): Suit to in-built rockets, users gain a +30 bonus to Jump checks and are always considered to have a running start.
  • Power Charge (Sp): As a standard action the user can power up, causing the gears on their arms and legs to spin and emit steam. The next action they take before the next of their next round is three times as effective for damage, healing, and skill checks. Once used, it cannot be used again for 1 minute.
  • Stability (Ex): The suit offer stability as the dwarf racial feature. This stacks with actual stability.
  • Universal Damage Reduction (Ex): 10/-. Unlike normal damage reduction, universal damage reduction applies to all forms of damage, even energy such as fire or force damage.
  • Weapons Systems (Ex): All weapons wielded by the user count as magical weapons, and the user gains Improved Unarmed Strike. If they were already able to use unarmed strikes, their damage size increases by one step.

As a move action a helmet can go into place taking up the head and face slots and suppressing any items currently held there. With the helmet, the suit is air-tight and with an in-built life support that protects the user from ambient environmental effects and inhaled hazards. The user gains Darkvision 60 ft, Low-Light Vision, Telepathy out to 100 ft, and detect magic at will while the helmet is on.
