Dragondancer

A mix of physical power and dexterous technique with arcane abilities, the dragondancer brings magical strikes in the form of dragon attacks to tear and destroy its opponents.

Through dance they summon aspects of dragons, in both strength and magic, and use them to hit opponents with mystical arts. They long for the power of dragons and thanks to the imitation of their movements they achieve similar results to those of a sorcerer. Despite this, dragondancers are not born but made through rigorous study and training, such as monks, though a drop of draconic blood helps a long way in the learning of dragondance, as its expression comes more from the strength of conviction rather than peace of the mind.

Making a Sword Saint

Dragondancers are martial characters at heart, with some additional tools to help in other roles. They excel at melee combat, have some field-control abilities and some ranged options.

Abilities: Beside using Strength, Constitution and some Dexterity, dragondancers appreciate having an high Charisma score.

Races: Almost any race may become a dragondancer, but those that value physical prowess and mental fortitude are more often found among the dragondancers, this includes humans, elves, orcs and their half-breed.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the sword saint.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Sword saints are proficient with one weapon of their choice, as per the Chosen Weapon feature. They are proficient in the use of light armor and light shields.

Variable Saves: A sword saint may choose two of its saves to have a good progression instead of poor. Once this choice has been made it can't be changed.

Chosen Weapon (Ex): A sword saint is proficient in one weapon and one weapon only, of any kind, even unarmed strikes, natural weapons and shields. The weapon, a specific weapon, not any of its kind, is masterwork and the sword saint gains the Weapon Focus (chosen weapon) feat for freee. The weapons deals 1d6 of its normal damage instead of the damage listed for it. The damage increases according to the sword saint's level, as per the table below. This damage is used for both Medium and Small sword saints, while other sizes adjust the damage die based on this table. Their sword saint level counts as fighter level for the purpose of requirements.

Table: Sword Saint's Chosen Weapon Progression

Level Damage Critical Range Critical Modifier
1st - 4th 1d6 20 x2
5th - 9th 1d8 19-20 x2
10th - 14th 2d6 19-20 x3
15th - 19th 2d8 18-20 x3
20th 2d12 18-20 x4

Martial Style (Sp): There are hundres of ways to hold a weapon, and there are just as many sword saints! Each sword saint chooses one the following martial styles:

  • Analytical Style: Sword saints who prefer a methodical approach are practioner of the Analytical Style. They gain the Combat Expertise feat for free.
  • Dual Style: A few sword saints specialize in the use of double weapons or wield two of the same weapon (this is an exception for the Chosen Weapon feature). They gain the Two-Weapon Fighting feat for free.
  • Powerful Style: in second place, this style favors those sword saints that use brutal moves in combat. They gain the Power Attack feat for free.
  • Refined Style: Most sword saints follow this style of fighting, electing an elegant style of battling. They gain the Weapon Finesse feat for free.

Defensive Style: Defense is needed as much as a good offense, so sword saints train in different ways to block, evade and parry attacks. At 2nd level they choose one of the following:

  • Armored: These sword saints train to wear heavy armours and shields. They gain proficiency with one armour and one shield of their choosing. The limitations of Chosen Weapon apply to this feature.
  • Armorless: Most sword saints prefer to go light and so, if they avoid wearing armor, they add their highest mental ability modifier to their AC. This does not prevent them from using shields.

Secret Technique: Studying their chosen weapon, sword saints learn new tricks and moves to apply in combat. At 2nd level and each time they gain this feature they gain one secret technique from this list: Secret Techniques.

Aura Weapon (Ex): Starting at 3rd level sword saints have bonded so deeply woth their weapon that a veil of their personality wraps around it, strengthening it. Their chosen weapon becomes magical, and gains a +1 enhancement bonus. This bonus increases by 1 every three subsequent levels, up to a maximum of +5 at level 15. They can meditate to enhance the weapon further with special abilities. They must expend XP and gold as if they were crafting magic weapons or armors, even without the feat. They don't need to provide spells or other special requirements, but use their sword saint level as caster level. They may transform their weapon by adding a special material, item template or other modification to it at half the cost. Doing so requires the requested time, or 8 hours of consecutive meditation if no time is given.

Focus Strike (Ex): From 3rd level, sword saints may focus all their power into their chosen weapon. By making a single attack as a standard action, they may inflict 1d6 per class level of damage (plus all modifiers) instead of the normal damage of the weapon. They may use this feature once per half their class levels per day, but failing to strike does not consume the use.

Draconic Attunement: At level 4th a dragondancer must choose one among these two options:

  • Corporeal Dragon: Your physical dragonsteps attacks and Dragonspear are more solid, allowing you to add your Strength modifier to the damage, and to apply feats such as Power Attack to them.
  • Spiritual Dragon: Your physical dragonsteps attacks and Dragonspear are more ethereal, allowing you to add your Charisma modifier to the attack roll, instead of Strength, and damage, when using them.

Adamantine Dragon (Ex): From level 6, the dragondancer's physical attacks from dragondance, unarmed strikes and Dragonspear count as made of adamantine for the purpose of interacting with damage reduction.

Mettle (Ex): At 7th level and higher, a dragondancer can resist magical and unusual attacks with great willpower or fortitude. If it makes a successful Will or Fortitude save against an attack that normally would have a lesser effect on a successful save (such as any spell with a saving throw entry of Will half or Fortitude partial), it instead completely negates the effect. An unconscious or sleeping dragondancer does not gain the benefit of Mettle.

Superior Mettle (Ex): At 14th level its Mettle feature improves, allowing it to suffer only the reduced effects on a failed saving throw.

Rising Dragon (Ex): At 18th level and higher, a dragondancer's physical attacks from the dragondance, unarmed strikes and Dragonspear count as being of adamantine and of its alignment for the purpose of interacting with damage reduction. A dragondancer neutral on one or more axis must choose an aligment on each axis to apply this feature (the choice is definitive, unless it changes alignment).

Dance of the Eternal Dragon: By level 20, the dragondancer becomes one with the dragons. It gains the draconic subtype, becomes immune to magical sleep and paralysis, counts as a dragon for interacting with Frightful Presence, gains the Timeless Body feature of a druid, and its dragondance lasts indefinitely, until it falls unconscious.
