Rating a Homebrew Article: expanding modification options
Additional information regarding the use of use the rating template, including examples, can be found on the [[:Template:Rating|Rating Template]] page.}}
===Outdated Modifying Ratings===Sometimes an article will go through a substantial revision, and the old criticisms will no longer apply to it. In these cases, it's not fair for a rating to bring down the related page since it no longer applies. These ratings can be marked as outdated and not added in to the ratings on the article page with the addition of the "|OldRating=NewVersion" parameter in the template.
===Legacy Ratings=Your Own====You can modify your own ratings any time, and for any reason. Simply edit the talk page, and adjust your "|rating=" or "|reason" parameters as you see fit. Then save the page when your changes have been made. ====Someone Else's====You may not modify anyone else's rating except under very specific circumstances, each of which are explained below. In each case you are '''required''' to notify them of the change on their talk page, as you are in effect erasing their input on the article and diluting the value of their name. We frown on this here as we do everywhere else. *'''Inappropriate Ratings:''' Sometimes a rating will violate one of our ratings guidelines, like if a user rates their own article or downrates based on balance instead of quality. These ratings may be removed by an administrator, but not by a normal wiki user. *'''Outdated Ratings:''' Sometimes an article will go through a substantial revision, often as a result of ratings criticism, and the old criticisms will no longer apply to it. In these cases, it's not fair for an outdated rating to bring down the related page since it no longer applies, particularly if the author of the rating has had substantial time to update their opinion. These ratings can be marked by the relevant article's author or co-authors (and only that author or co-authors) as outdated with the addition of the "|OldRating=NewVersion" parameter in the template. This will add a notice to the article and cause it to not be added to the ratings on the article page. *'''Legacy Ratings:''' This is a case that a normal user will not need to use, but may see from time to time. We have previously worked with two different ratings styles, neither of which we use any longer. Both of these used different ratings structures from out current version. We didn't want throw out the ratings that these generated, however, and so an administrator we have mapped them to the new scale instead. Some even use a depreciated template and need to be migrated to the new template. They can be identified by their Legacy Rating text, and should be updated by their rater when possible.
