Alchemen

Alchemically grown and forged artificial people

Alchemen were created by the Alchemical Throne to combat the Manacled and God Thrones. Though the Alchemical Throne was cut down before it was fully established and its workshops destroyed, an unknown number of Alchemen were completed and fielded before that, while others were nearing completion at the time of the Alchemical Throne's destruction and their growth pods were somehow not destroyed with the workshops.

Personality

Alchemen are, for the most part, an abandoned people. They are comparatively few in number, with the means to create them a lost technique and their creators mostly slain, and only a few of them even knew their creators in the first place. This has left alchemen with a sort of racial despair that strikes them when they are not occupying their minds with other matters. That said, they know they are fairly durable and adaptable, and seemingly immortal, leading to a confidence that verges on arrogance.

Physical Description

Alchemen are obviously not naturally born people. Their flesh is living soft wood, breached in places such as their knuckles and elbows by their metal bones. The stomachs softly glow from the fire of their alchemical stomach. Their breath is smoke and steam.

Created to be soldiers, Alchemen were built with a flawless humanoid form, undifferentiated by sexual characteristics--leading many who are unfamiliar with the alchemen and gender as a whole to assume they are all men.

Racial Traits

  • +2 Strength, +2 Wisdom: Alchemen were designed to be soldiers, and their living wood flesh is strong and their alchemical brains are keenly aware.
  • Humanoid (Construct): Alchemen are artificially created beings, but while their body is more akin to a construction, the living wood of their flesh and delicate alchemical workings of their power system make them functionally similar enough to a humanoid creature.
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, an alchemen has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Alchemen base land speed is 30 feet.
  • Darkvision: An alchemen can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and an alchemen can function just fine with no light at all.
  • Hard to Read (Ex): Alchemen are difficult to socially read largely owing to the strangeness of their wooden faces, giving them a +2 bonus on Bluff and Intimidate checks. However, this same strangeness, along with the circumstances of their creation, makes them less convincing in diplomatic areas, giving them a -4 penalty to Diplomacy checks with non-Alchemen.
  • Alchemical Furnace (Ex): Alchemen are powered by an internal alchemical furnace. In game terms, this essentially means they need to eat as a normal humanoid, but they can consume any form of matter.
  • Like that but better: Alchemen are treated as Warforged for anything which requires one to be a warforged (such as Warforged feats) and may install warforged components if you happen to find one that isn't a waste of time and money.
  • Artificial Mind and Body (Ex): Alchemen's bodies and minds are similar enough to those of natural humanoids that they are susceptible to poisons, disease, mind-affecting effects, and so on, but are sufficiently different enough that they are more difficult to affect with such things. Alchemen gain a +4 bonus on all Fort and Ref saves. Additionally, alchemen do not need to breath, nor sleep.
  • Low-light Vision (Ex): Alchemen can see twice as far as normal in conditions of low light.
