Raigo[edit]
Once hunted, now the hunters, these proud ratfolk remember the sword and the spear and will take up arms against anything which threatens their peaceful existence.
For ages past, the raigo were a timid and fearful species. Their world was surrounded by predators which hungered for them, great beasts stronger and more terrifying than anything their civilization could engineer. They were on the path to extinction from an incursion of massive feline entities from the plane of shadow, when a breakthrough in both metallurgy occurred, and the rise of a particularly brave and fearless member ascended from their burrows. The legend of Risan is a tale told to every Raigo, a classic hero who fought, and died, to keep his people free from living in fear. Though he did perish before the story finished, his bravery inspired so many a thousand Risans took his place. And from a thousand, a million, and a million more.
Through sheer courage or recklessness, they ended up not only overwhelming their enemy but invading their realm, before sealing the gates for good. The power of martial force ended up being so influential that it became part of their culture. From a young age they are taught to carry weapons, to respect weapons, and the responsibility once must bear to be a weapon. In turn, they vow to never again cower to either outside threat, or even their own kin, and thus are fiercely rebellious and honor-driven.
Personality[edit]
The common Raigo is taught to be honorbound, even if each haven and culture may have differing views on what amounts to honor. All respect the power of weapons, and all remember that a weapon is a tool to shake off that which would rule by fear and death. So while Raigo are often quite capable of unimaginable violence, it is a tool they respect too much to use in anger. If you face one in battle, you face a creature of purpose.
Physical Description[edit]
Raigo are similar to nezumi and other ratfolk, being tall, lithe, and covered in short fur with bare rat tail and nimble hands and legs, with a rodent head. They come in all manner of colors natural to ratkind, sometimes with pronounced buck teeth which grow and are replaced easily. Most are fit due to their culture favoring the use of, and thus the exercise with, weaponry or armor.
Relations[edit]
Raigo fit well with other battle-minded species, though they grow cold on those who fight without purpose or honor. This tends to make them friends with dwarves and certain orcs, elves, and humans.
Alignment[edit]
Raigo can be any alignment, but tend towards chaotic good and any lawful or non-evil neutral alignment.
Lands[edit]
The raigo originally were a burrowing species in a place called Corim, a place which was plagued with portals connected to other realms from a civilization long ago. It is from there monsters spewed forth, and from there the shadow beasts arose. To this day the land is swept for any additional missed stray gateways in working order, and promptly destroyed on sight.
Religion[edit]
The raigo are not known to be religious, only valuing their particular martial codes of honor.
Language[edit]
Raigo speak Common and Undercommon, which was apparently the language of their great enemy and often blended into their particular dialect of Common.
Names[edit]
Raigo names are notably average, and often colored by their surrounding cultures. Family names are often evocative of heraldic crests and images, or useful battle-oriented terms and jobs.
