For Master Bodram!
—Basho, Elven Ebon Eye Ninja, Secret Notes #4

It is naturally to support the mundane with magic, and for the assassins and spies of the ebon eye ninja clan, divination and illusions prove highly effective in their job.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Ebon Eye Ninja.

Spellcasting: At each level except 10th, you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if you had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If you had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a Ebon Eye Ninja, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day, caster level, and spells known.

Sneak Attack or Skirmish Improvement (Ex): Levels gained in this class count as levels for any one qualifying class in which you obtained sneak attack or skirmish, for determining the strength of your sneak attack or skirmish.

Watchful Eye (Su): Ebon Eye Ninjas typically wear a decorative headpiece, amulet, mask, or ring with a stylized eye upon it, which acts as the focus for Watchful Eye and related abilities. So long as you possess this focus, you can activate the watchful eye ability at will. As a swift action, you mark a known creature within 60 ft. So long as they remain in range you are aware of their position as if you had blindsense, and you gain a +1 insight bonus to AC against them. You may only have one target of watchful eye at a time; new instances dismiss the old instance. The eye lasts until you dismiss it as a free action, or they remain out of range for at least 1 round. Creatures able to see magic such as via detect magic can identify marked targets by a ghostly eye watching over the target.

Spell Conversion: At 2nd level and even even level after, the ebon eye ninja gains various powers which require the consumption of prepared spells or spells per day. This functions not unlike a cleric's ability to spontaneously cast cure spells, except you gain access to the following spell-like abilities activated on consuming the appropriate spell slot of equal or higher level. Effects are standard actions unless said otherwise.

Hidden Weapons (Sp): This ability is obtained at 2nd level. By consuming a 3rd level spell, the ebon eye ninja can cast an effect that turns up to two weapons on their body invisible (one in each hand). It persists until unsheathed or otherwise employed, and is treated as drawing a hidden weapon with no more difficulty as normally drawing a weapon. The first attack with an invisible weapon against an opponent that cannot see it is made against their flatfooted AC. The duration is 24 hours or until discharged, and is considered a 3rd level illusion spell.

Telejump (Sp): This ability is obtained at 4th level. By consuming a 4th level spell, the ebon eye ninja can teleport swiftly in a puff of magical glyphs. This functions like dimension doors except the range is limited to Close range, and it is cast as a move action. This is considered a 4th level conjuration spell.

Copy Object (Sp): This ability is obtained at 6th level. By consuming a 5th level spell, the ebon eye ninja can polymorph into a physical object up to one size larger or smaller than themselves. It must be an object they can see, and they transform into an exact duplicate of the object. In this form they cannot attack, but retain all of their senses and are able to animate enough to move 5 ft as a move action. They gain a +10 bonus on disguise to appear as the object in question, and do not need to see the object they have copied after they have used this spell-like ability. Dismissing the effect is a move action. This is considered a 5th level transmutation spell.

True Sight (Sp): This ability is obtained at 8th level. By consuming a 6th level spell as a swift action, the ebon eye ninja gains the benefits of comprehend languages and true seeing, though only for 1 minute. This is considered a 6th level divination spell.

Escape (Sp): This ability is obtained at 10th level. If a ebon eye ninja takes enough damage to fall below 0 hp, they may expend a 7th level spell as an immediate action to absorb damage and then immediate teleport as if dimension door. The ninja absorbs up to 5 hp damage per level. If this is enough to keep them alive, they are left at 0 hp after they teleport, otherwise they teleport dead at the new location. Using this ability leaves requires your watchful eye focus, as it is left behind when you teleport, and is so exhausting it can only be performed 1/day. This is considered a 7th level conjuration spell.

Silent Spell Mastery: The 3rd level ebon eye ninja cannot make noise while they are sneaking around planning trouble, not even with spellcasting. They may use their Silent Spell metamagic with no spell level adjustment.

Tracking Eye (Su): When an ebon eye ninja uses their watchful eye ability, it persists even if out of range. While out of range you know the direction, but not distance or exact square, of the target and gain a +6 bonus on any skill checks to track or perceive them. If they escape to another plane you know they are not on this plane but not to where until you and the target exist on the same plane. It now ends when dismissed or when the target is killed. The effect can also be removed by effects which remove curses, and you cannot tell if tracking was lost by death or by curse removal.

Death Attack: The 5th level ebon eye ninja gains the death attack ability of an assassin, except the DC is 10 + 1/2 HD + your casting ability modifier.

Evasion (Ex): Ebon Eye Ninjas at 6th level gain evasion as a rogue. If they already have evasion, they gain Improved Evasion instead.

Evil Eye (Su): The 7th level ebon eye ninja who uses their watchful/tracking eye ability curses them further by revealing weak points even in the midst of combat. Opponents no longer need to be unaware of your presence for death attack to work, though you must still observe a creature for 3 rounds and meet the requirements for sneak attack to try your death attack again. Those cursed by your evil eye also take a -1 profane penalty on saving throws against your spells.

Visionary Eye (Su): At 9th level, the ebon eye ninja can use their watchful eye focus as the focus for any divination spell, including scrying. In addition during the first round of combat, they can cast any divination spell of 1 standard action or less as a swift action. If the divination requires concentration, concentration is maintained automatically with no action on their part, for a number of rounds up to their casting ability modifier (minimum 1).

Continued Caster Level: A 10th level ebon eye ninja does not forget their training. Their caster level always equals their character level for their spells and spell-like abilities, no matter what class they take afterwards. However they do not gain new spells per day unless their class advances such.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Ebon Eye Ninja[edit]

Combat: Your spells compliment your ninja abilities, from the ability to set up sneak attacks and skirmish attacks, to utility, invisibility, and other effects. It's a risky combat move due to your low hp, but one with many options. You favor spells that do not rely on high DCs and take advantage of swift and immediate spells.

Advancement: You can focus on your rogue abilities, or your casting abilities, though continued caster level allowed mundane advancement without losing the effectiveness of what spells you do know. In addition, arcane trickster is a likely continued progression for arcane casters.

Resources: All manner of governments can see the value of a magical rogue in their employ for the purpose of spying.

Ebon Eye Ninjas in the World[edit]

NPC Reactions: If the commoners know your profession, you have already failed your job.
