Engiechilla[edit]

Engiechilla are tiny intelligent and partly synthetic rodents resembling chinchillas and related species. They are sometimes known as "Engineers" due to their habit of manipulation and building.

Personality[edit]

Born to build, engiechillas are a creative species always curious on how things work, how to make them, or how to unmake them. This makes them relatable to gnomes and similar tinkerers, but they lack the chaotic fancy of the fey. Rather they are often tempered with a lawful, dutiful, and focused nature on the things they work with.

Physical Description[edit]

Engiechillas, also known to some as "Engineers", are an artificial species created by a mad scientist and eventually released to breed true. Combining aspects of chinchilla, rabbit, and sometimes even racoons, the engiechilla is a rodent with large puffy fur, tails of various lengths and patterns, and highly mobile hands with thumbs. Their deceptively nimble and flexible bodies and their dexterous little hands lend to them working on machinery. Internally, they are even stranger as their forms are not entirely natural and contain many synthetic plastic and metallic aspects which are grown as part of their bodies. Their minds naturally grow silicon bits resembling microchips which function in much the same way with normal gray matter merely supplementing their thought process. While they possess male and female aspects, breeding is only capable externally with a third egg like "technological womb" which the engiechillas are genetically programmed to known how to create given enough time and raw materials. Thus these creatures technically lay eggs and grow within these outside components.

Their biology is such as to allow, and even expect, cybernetic augmentation after the effect. Grafting is very common.

Their original purpose seems to have been as a work force for some sort of great, if fine detailed, work of engineering. While no longer bound to this purpose they retain a genetic memory of how to create certain technological aspects including their means of reproduction. A group of engiechillas will eventually build a hivemind master computer whose purposes is to create new minds and souls to be downloaded into freshly born engiechilla bodies. Without the master computer, new minds can still be made but take far longer to process in each individual technological womb, resulting in a slow birth rate.

Relations[edit]

Engiechillas are ever curious and ever needing to build, and so relations to those outside of them are inevitable. These will usually fall under the aspect of business transactions, and eventually art and cultural sharing, especially in the form of architecture and aesthetics. This, combined with weak frames ill suited for conflict, encourage engiechilla society to make well with their neighbors.

Alignment[edit]

Engiechillas can be any alignment, with many being true neutral.

Lands[edit]

Engiechillas originally began in a secret lab on a forbidden island, but eventually escaped (or perhaps were released) into the open. They prefer hot, dry, arid climates as in spite of their large fur coats they manage best with warmth rather than cold.

Religion[edit]

Engiechillas sometimes revere their now mysterious creator as a deity, but otherwise show no association with any other god.

Language[edit]

Engiechillas speak Common as their base language.

Names[edit]

Engiechillas have unusual names, for their minds are "programs" that spawn from their parents, or a central hive computer. As such names are often nonsense titles to other species, such as "Production" or "Observator 18".

Racial Traits[edit]

  • -2 Strength: While unusually strong for their size, they remain weaker than humans and similar beings.
  • Magical Beast: More animal than man, though just as smart. They do not possess darkvision or low-light vision in spite of being magical beasts.
  • Tiny: As a Tiny creature, an engiechilla gains a +2 size bonus to Armor Class, a +2 size bonus on attack rolls, a –8 size penalty on special attack (bull rushes, grapples, overruns, and trips) checks, and a +8 size bonus on Hide checks, but it uses smaller weapons than humans use, and its lifting and carrying limits are one-half of those of a Medium character. Furthermore, as a tiny creature, an engiechilla has a default space of 2 and 1/2 feet and 0 feet of reach.
  • Engiechilla base land speed is 20 feet. Climb 20 ft
  • Anklebiter: Engiechillas gain Anklebiter as a bonus feat, as they are used to darting between feet and dangerous machinery.
  • Cunning (Ex): Engiechillas gain a +1 bonus on all Intelligence and Wisdom based ability and skill checks.
  • Efficient Crafting (Ex): When an engiechilla is creating anything (via craft check or with item creation feats) they can either choose to cut the time required in half, or roll twice and take the better result. In addition choose one race or class: they count as this race or class for the purpose of crafting and item pre-requisites, including substituting for spells required in magical item creation provided they would be high enough level to cast said spells.
  • Ideal for Hamsters (Ex): Engiechillas have a natural endure elements (warm only)
  • Tech Knowledge (Ex): Engiechillas have a special form of bardic knowledge based on knowledge and operation of machines and technology. It can be used to identify technology and its functions, even if unlabeled, or to use technology without knowledge as if it were a Use Magic Device check. Like Use Magic Device, it has the same consequences for failure. Their tech knowledge is their HD + their Intelligence modifier. If a successful tech knowledge check is made before another relevant skill check (such as Disable Device or Program), they gain a +2 circumstance bonus to the roll.
  • Structural Weakness (Ex): With a great knowledge of objects, engiechillas can perform precision damage and critical hits on objects and constructs. If they could already do this, add +2 to the damage or check against break DC.
  • Skills: Choose any one Craft, Profession, Disable Device, Knowledge Engineering, or Program. You gain a +3 racial bonus to the chosen skill. All these skills are always considered class skills, and may be used untrained even with no ranks.
  • Automatic Languages: Common
  • Bonus Languages: Any (except secret languages)
  • Favored Class: Artificer or Rogue
  • Level Adjustment: +0
  • Effective Character Level: 1
