Half-Painted[edit]
When a creature has been in the Plane of Pictures for an extended period of time, they might become what’s known as a half-painted
Creating a Half-Painted[edit]
Half-Painted is an acquired template that can be given to any non-illustrated creature that has been in a Plane of Pictures (3.5e Location) Scene for an extended period time and has started to physically be assimilated to the painted world but is still able to leave the scene in plane of pictures. This template can also be added to a non-illustrated creature upon entering a scene in the plane of pictures or by certain magical effects cast upon them from within the scene, such as a spell or having a magic item used on them. While a half-painted appears to be completely normal to all other painted creatures within the scene, it also appears to be normal to non-illustrated creatures within the scene but appears to have odd artistic accents, such as being more vibrant in color and shading or blending into the painting similar to how a painted creature would. To an onlooker viewing the half-painted from outside of the plane of pictures, it's just a part of the painting and devoid of life.
Half-Painted can be assigned to any type of creature that does not have the Painted (3.5e Template) and has been in the plane of pictures at least once, the original creature that has acquired this template is referred to hereafter as the "base creature".
Since a half-painted is a creature that was changing from a non-illustrated creature into an illustrated creature while they were inside the scene in the plane of pictures, it may continue its transformation into fully painted creature if it returns to the plane of pictures or if it stays in the plane of pictures once it has already obtained this template over time.
Size and Type[edit]
Size:[edit]
Same as base creature.
Type:[edit]
Upon taking the half-painted template, the base creature’s type changes to an Aberration, however the half-painted is treated in all aspects as if it was the original base creature when interacting with any other creatures both inside and out of the plane of pictures. The base creature’s original type becomes their sub-type and the half-painted keeps all of the same properties, skills, features and templates, both acquired and inherited, saves, skills, etc. of that of the base creature. Do not recalculate stats upon adding this template.
Hit Dice[edit]
Same as base creature.
Speed[edit]
A half-painted’s speed is the same as the base creature, however while the half-painted is inside a scene in the plane of pictures, they cannot move more than 10 feet beyond the edge of the scene they are in unless the change scenes. The half-painted will appear to be frozen in place in the scene while being looked at by a creature observing them from the outside, but if the half-painted moves and no one is looking, they are moving around within the scene as if they were a non-illustrated creature and on the next time a creature observes them from outside of the plane of pictures, the half-painted will have changed positions within the scene but still appear frozen in place to its observer. A half-painted's movement is completely unaffected while in the real world and functions exactly the same as the base creature.
Armor Class[edit]
Same as base creature.
Attack[edit]
A half-painted creature's attacks are unchanged from that of the base creature, however it cannot attack or interact with a creature through the barrier of the scene in any way.
Full Attack[edit]
A half-painted creature's full attack is unchanged from that of the base creature, however it cannot attack or interact with a creature through the barrier of the scene in any way.
Special Attacks[edit]
Same as base creature.
Special Qualities[edit]
Repaint(Su):[edit]
A half-painted can as a free action while inside the plane of pictures scene modify their art style and coloring to that of their liking or to match the scene they are in. However unlike a painted creature, onlookers that are looking at the half-painted from outside of their scene in the plane of pictures will be able to see the change as it happens. While Repainting acts in the same way as an SRD:Alter Self spell, it grants no additional benefits and is purely cosmetic. If a half-painted is modified by a creature outside of their scene in the plane of pictures, the modifications change the half-painted creatures design instantly and against their will. For example, if the half-painted wishes to have green hair when it is really blue, their hair will appear green to all creatures within their scene and to those looking at the scene from the outside, but if an artist who is repainting the half-painted changes their blue hair to green, all creatures both inside and outside the plane of pictures will see the change and it will become their new default hair color.
While a half-painted is outside of the plane of pictures, it can 3 times/day use repaint as a spell like ability, and have it work in a similar fashion to an alter self spell, however because of their semi-painted origins, they can physically be repainted by physical means while in the real world, such as dunking them into a vat or red paint would naturally make the half-painted a solid red color as their default design. If any paint or ink is applied to them, any and all colorings and designs put onto them are permanent and cannot be removed until they are repainted again.
Painted Time-Space(Ex):[edit]
While normally a painted creatures entire life is contained within the scene they are in, a half painted is only partially bound to their scene, granting them similar benefits while they are within the plane of pictures. When an observer views a half-painted from outside of their scene in the plane of pictures, they appear to be frozen in time and space for all of eternity, but to the half-painted, they are able to move around and interact with other creatures inside their scene like any other painted creature would. A half-painted is fully protected from any and all influence outside of their scene and considered to be under the effects of a SRD:Mind Blank spell and a SRD:Time Stop spell at all times to a creature outside of their scene in the plane of pictures. When a painted creature is interacting with creatures inside of their scene, both illustrated and non-illustrated, they do not have the warping of time and space affect them and do not gain these protective effects.
This is also true in reverse if a half-painted leaves their scene in the plane of pictures. While a half-painted is in the real world they are treated as if under the mind blank spell and time stop spell to all creatures in the plane of pictures but do not gain these protective effects against creatures in the real world.
Window Scene(Ex):[edit]
The world outside of the half-painted creatures scene is completely visible to them regardless of wherever they are in the scene, and while they appear frozen in time to their observers, they are able to view the world outside of the scene in real time as if looking through a window. Hence a painted creature can look out of their scene and see the world outside and the people going about their business completely unaware the half-painted creature is watching them. If the half-painted leaves the scene in the plane of pictures and enters the real world, they do not have window into the plane of pictures, the painted world they just came from is still just a painting after all.
Scene Change(Su):[edit]
While a half-painted appears to be completely trapped within their current scene, it couldn't be further from the truth. A half-painted can move from their current scene within the plane of pictures into any other adjacent scene within this plane. The adjacent scene could simply be the picture across the hall or a scene far on the other side of the world since all scenes within the plane of pictures are equidistant from each other. When a half-painted creature changes scenes, they vanish from their original scene completely, and to any onlooker outside of the plane of pictures they appear to no longer be inside the painting they were viewing.
When a half-painted creature moves to another scene other than their original scene, they instantly appear in the new scene as if they were painted into it to begin with and are counted as an Outsider to all other creatures within the scene they have moved to, and if the painted creature is killed within their new scene or banished from it, they are cast back into their original scene as if they had never left to begin with on the next day or "reset interval" within their scene of origin. Unlike a fully painted creature, if a non-illustrated creature enters their scene while the half-painted is not currently in the scene, they are not instantly teleported back into their original scene and a half-painted can use scene change even when a non-illustrated creature is present in their scene.
A half-painted cannot use this ability while outside of the plane of pictures and can only use this ability 3 times/day, unlike a painted creature which can use this as a free action whenever it wants to.
Half-Painted Existence(Ex):[edit]
A half-painted’s existence is not tied to their scene of origin in the same way as a fully painted creatures existence is. Instead, a half-painted is treated as an outsider to the real world and the plane of pictures, but not its scene of origin within the plane of pictures. If a half-painted is killed while in a scene within the plane of pictures, it is rendered comatose until healed; the same applies to when the half-painted is in any other plane such as the real world. However if a half-painted is destroyed or killed while it is in its scene of origin it instantly revives as if nothing had happened the next day or “reset interval” in their scene of origins “scene-time”. Because of this, a half-painted can not be raised from the dead using normal methods once killed as it is not really dead, however if the half-painted’s scene of origin is destroyed from the outside world, it dies permanently and without a save.
Creature Of Two Worlds(Ex):[edit]
While a half-painted cannot interact directly with creatures outside of the plane of pictures, a half-painted is a creature of both the painted world and the real world. Because of this, they can attempt to leave the scene in the plane of pictures or enter it at any time with a successful fortitude save (DC 15) or autohypnosis check (DC 20). If a half-painted attempts to use a Picture Frame of Entrapment (3.5e Equipment) they pulled into the scene and are not not allowed a save to resist being transported bodily into the scene in the plane of pictures.
A half-painted creature does not need to worry about death by gradual artistic organ failure when entering or leaving the plane of pictures as it has already been partially assimilated to the plane of pictures but still holds some of its existence in the real world. Transitioning between either the plane of pictures and the real world is a full round action and provokes an attack of opportunity from both sides of the barrier. Once the half-painted has transitioned across the barrier it cannot attempt to do so again as easily for 15 minutes as its body needs time to acclimate to the other world before it can try again without any issues.
Weakness to Paint Thinners(Ex):[edit]
If a half-painted creature touches paint thinners such as nail polish remover or turpentine, it takes 1d6 HP damage per round of exposure to the solvent. Damage caused by paint thinners can only be healed by repainting the disintegrated parts of the half-painted creature back into existence or by using a lesser restoration spell or similar effect. This weakness applies to the half-painted regardless of what plane it is currently in.
Abilities[edit]
+2 Charisma
Skills[edit]
Same as base creature.
Feats[edit]
Darkvision(Ex):[edit]
A half-painted creature gains the ability to see up to 60 feet in full color in total darkness and black and white dark vision twice as far. but only for objects within their scene. If a half-painted looks out of their scene and into the real world, they can see up to 30 ft in total darkness outside of their scene, but only in black and white. The distances for low light vision for both is tripled. If the base creature had darkvision, their previous version of dark vision is overwritten by this one while the half-painted is within the scene in the plane of pictures, however if they already had darkvision, the previous version they had is used while outside of the plane of pictures. A half-painted does not gain darkvision if it is outside of the plane of pictures if it did not already have it to begin with.
Half-Painted Traits(Ex):[edit]
A half-painted creature is not subject to critical hits, death from massive damage, energy drain, ability drain, bleeding effects or non-lethal damage, can be affected by spells that affect both constructs and non-constructs, and with 0 hit points is disabled and can only take a single move action or standard action in each round, but strenuous activity does not risk further injury. When a half-painted creature's hit points are less than 0 and greater than –10, a they are inert, unconscious and helpless, and cannot perform any actions. However, an inert half-painted does not lose additional hit points unless more damage is dealt to it, as with a living creature that is stable. A half-painted creature is unable to procreate with others even if the base creature is able to reproduce.
Half-Paint Speak(Ex):[edit]
While all fully painted creatures are able to speak to each other as if they all share the same language and are fully capable of understanding each other, the half-painted doesn’t share this natural communication skill to the same degree. A half-painted instead gains a +10 to their speak languages check when attempting to learn a specific language that a fully painted creature knows, if the succeed the speak languages check they will be able to communicate with a painted creature that has the same subtype as the painted creature they tried to understand as if they knew the same language. however they do not gain this bonus when communicating with a non-illustrated creature, even if the non-illustrated creature has the same subtype as a painted creature you can communicate with using this ability. If the painted creature naturally knows the same language as the half-painted, then this feat is not needed and the two can communicate normally. Example 1: a half-painted elf is able to speak to a painted elf and a normal elf from the real world normally since they all know elven. Example 2: the half-painted elf from earlier tries to speak to a painted goblin and learns the painted goblins language and can now speak to painted goblins as if they knew their language, but the real goblins will still not understand the half-painted elf because the half-painted elf and painted goblins aren't speaking goblin at all. Example 3: the half-painted elf from examples 2 and 3 then tries to learn the real goblin language to talk to real goblins using half-paint speak, but finds out its a lot harder than he thought and needs to take some lessons in goblin first.
