Eldritch Subtype[edit]

The eldritch subtype applies to horrifying Lovecraftian creatures from beyond the veil. These creatures almost always cause dark insight and mindbreak simply by their presence. These beings generally live on the warped plane and are unseen by the waking world, or cannot exist until certain rituals are performed or the stars become right.

Traits[edit]

An eldritch creature possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).

  • Alien Mindset: Eldritch creatures are immune to charms and compulsion effects, except against creature's effects with at least 5 points of dark insight. In addition, they are immune to dark insight and mindbreak (but may count as having an amount of dark insight equal to 1/2 its HD).
  • Anathemic Secrecy: Eldritch creatures are immune to all divination spells or effects.
  • Mad Insight: Seeing or otherwise becoming directly aware of an eldritch creature generally provokes a Will save against dark insight and/or mindbreak, specified in the creature entry. Dark insight is usually only gained upon first encountering it and never again for future instances, though mindbreak may apply at any point.
  • Warped Existence: An eldritch creature may only exist if certain circumstances defined in its entry exist. It may be as simple as a certain time of day, the existence of an elder evil's approach, or as complex as a specific ritual or a single date. An eldritch creature can be defeated, but will return when the circumstances are right to exist again (often with a cooldown when it may return). There may be ways to permanently slay an eldritch creature, but some creatures may have no means to keep them dead forever. On death, eldritch creatures are reduced to ash, powder, salt, water, or other substances.

Eldritch Subtype Creatures[edit]

The following creatures have the Eldritch subtype:

Table: Eldritch Creatures
Name Description
Flayed Horror The product of forbidden rituals to dark alien gods, the flayed horror almost appears to be an undead given its torn open skin and weeping wounds. Yet this hideous beast lives, and its mind is clouded with pain, insanity, and hunger for sweet blood. Always dripping toxic blood, it corrupts the entire area around where they lurk and often rendering its surroundings somehow different and wrong.
Mindeater Reindeer
Phynasm, Hungering Horror
