Segmented
Not all creatures fit nicely into a cubic shape. Some creatures are extremely long, shaped like worms or snakes, with a body which follows the direction and motion of the head. These segmented creatures are composed of several parts which may be targeted seperately. The segments have individual hit point and AC totals, but share all other aspects of the creature. If a segment drops below 0 hp that segement is dead, but it may not kill the entire creature. The entire creature has a hit point total equal to 1/2 the hit points of all the segements added together. Penalties for killing particular segments on the creature vary, as defined in the creature entry. Some segements may be vital and will immediately kill the creature. Other segements may cause a reduction in fighting abilities, mobility, or no penalty at all.
Segments follow the path of the lead segment, typically the head of the creature. These segments provoke attacks of opportunity for movement as normal for creatures.
For example, a giant snake may be 30 feet long but only be 5 feet wide. Its segements would be Medium creatures which followed its head, and be composed of 6 segements with the head as the front segement. Killing its back segements may lower its speed by 5 feet each time (minimum 5 ft), but killing its head will kill the rest of the segments.
