With a click the rapier began to extend until it was almost thrice as tall as its user.
This +1 rapier can shift into a longer form that grants the weapon reach (including threatened reach) but throws off its balance. As a move action it can extend with reach with a -4 penalty to all attack rolls. Alternatively it can extend to reach +5 ft additional for a -8 penalty to all attack rolls.
On a critical hit you can choose to immediately extend or retract the blade. If you extend the blade you push the creature to the end of your reach (if they are your size or smaller) or push yourself away (if larger) without provoking attacks of opportunity. The blade reaches your chosen size at the end of this movement with no further action on your part.
