Regeneration, Variant[edit]

The rules on regeneration have always caused many difficulties, with immunities and resistance to the damage type that breach to nigh invincibility granted by immunity to non-lethal damage. It is also frankly a little clunky, being entangled in said non-lethal damage rules. this alternative rule aim to fix the situation. A creature with the regeneration below no longer require a Constitution score and open more design space for monster.

If you wish to use this rule as a supplementary ruleset instead of a replacement, rename the regeneration described by this rule to Rejuvenation. This rule also offer another alternative to regeneration, which make the creature much more difficult to put down, but not unkillable.

Variant 1: Classic Regeneration (Ex) or (Su)[edit]

A creature with this extraordinary ability or supernatural ability is difficult to put down for good. While it regeneration is active, a creature with this special ability do not die normally upon reaching -10 hit points or lower and each round, at the start of it turn it heal a set amount of damage described in the creature entry as the number next to the regeneration ability. If the creature had both lethal and non-lethal damage, it heal the non-lethal damage first. If a creature is damaged by an effect which bypass her regeneration her maximum hit point is lowered by half that amount as well as it taking the damage. This reduction to maximum hit points may only be healed by rest, or by magical healing, for the same amount that is healed. If creature would take at least 1 damage per hit dice of the type that bypass her regeneration before any resistance or immunities, her regeneration stop for the following two rounds unless specified otherwise.

A creature with regeneration regrow limbs within a set period of time or 24 hours if not specified in the entry, the creature can reattach the severed member instantly by holding it to the stump. A creature with regeneration cannot survive the loss of it head, unless specified otherwise in it entry, however the head may survive, helpless and regrow it body. A creature with regeneration only regrow from the piece holding the center of her nervous system (such as the head) or equivalent, anything else is simply dead flesh which will rot away.

A creature with regeneration dies when her maximum hit point reach -10 (or her normal dying threshold if different), if it regeneration is stopped and then killed normally, if it reduced to pieces smaller than an inch each, is body is completely carbonized or if it head or central nervous system is completely obliterated. A [death]-effect or other effect which outright kill a creature still do so unless specified otherwise.

Variant 2: High Balance Regeneration (Ex) or (Su)[edit]

In games balanced at the High range however, players may not always have the tools to deal with a creature that is virtually invulnerable to death without a specific tool. In such games, instead a creature with this special quality replaces all above features with the following:

  • It gains fast healing equal to its previous regeneration amount
  • When it would take damage, it reduces the amount of damage taken by an amount equal to one-half its Hit Dice
  • It gains resilient equal to one-third its maximum HP, bypassed by the damage type or material it is vulnerable to

Should the creature take damage from a source it is vulnerable to, the three benefits above are suppressed for two rounds, unless otherwise noted in the creature's entry.

The creature can regrows limbs within 24 hours if not specified in the entry. The creature can reattach the severed limb instantly by holding it to the stump. The creature cannot survive the loss of it head, unless specified otherwise in it entry.
