Gargoyle
The classic gargoyle is a monster, a vicious flying demonic humanoid which enjoys tormenting creatures weaker than itself. However, not all are merely animalistic, predatory beings. Some take up the mantle of the original statues which were designed to chase off evil with their terrifying visages, and they become guardians and protectors of the buildings they keep. Their existence is usually a well kept secret, as they can easily pose as the carvings created by men.
Many gargoyles take the Gargoyle Stoneguard racial class to complete their gargoyle natural strengths.
Personality
A gargoyle's personality can vary, but often falls into two groups: those who follow the ways of their monstrous kin as predator cruel tormentors, and those who take the role as guardian. Taking the role of the guardian of an area does not always mean these gargoyles are good or kind, but they tend less toward acting the part of random encounter and more of the role of night haunt and manipulator, scaring off intruders when needed.
Physical Description
Gargoyles take various humanoid forms, many which resemble horrible demons and devils. They appear to be made of stone, with bat wings and often sharp teeth, claws, horns, tails, and other fiendish features. When a gargoyle freezes in place, they can be nearly undetectable as a living creature.
Relations
Perhaps due to their more violent kin, or perhaps due to appearance, gargoyles are often unwelcome. Yet they make their homes within urban areas simply by being well hidden. It would seem this stealth is to their liking as many gargoyles take great pain to ensue their existence remains nothing more than rumor.
Alignment
A gargoyle is not limited by race, though they are classically chaotic evil, and those with guardian roles usually take on a more lawful approach.
Lands
Gargoyles take roost in urban areas, specifically upon tall buildings, castles, ruins, and places where stone statues would not be amiss.
Religion
The religious structure of gargoyles, if any, is not well known. It is likely each gargoyle makes their own choices about the matter.
Language
Gargoyles speak Common and Terran.
Names
Gargoyle names typically sound old and archaic, perhaps adopted from the areas they haunt.
Racial Traits
- +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma: Hardy and tough as stone, they are lacking in mental prowess needing little for studies and less for social interaction.
- Monstrous Humanoid (Earth): Gargoyles have a fiendish humanoid appearance, and appear to be made of a stone-like flesh.
- Medium: As a Medium creature, a gargoyle has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
- Gargoyle base land speed is 30 feet.
- Darkvision: A gargoyle can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and a gargoyle can function just fine with no light at all.
- Claws (Ex): Gargoyles have a pair of claw attacks that deal 1d4 damage.
- Gliding (Ex): A Gargoyle can use her wings to glide, negating damage from a fall of any height and allowing 20 feet of forward travel for every 5 feet of descent. Gargoyles glide at a speed of 40 feet (average maneuverability). Even if a Gargoyle's maneuverability improves, she can't hover while gliding. A Gargoyle can't glide while carrying a medium or heavy load. If a Gargoyle becomes unconscious or helpless while in mid-air, her wings naturally unfurl and powerful ligaments stiffen the wings. The Gargoyle descends in a tight corkscrew and takes only 1d6 points of falling damage, no matter what the actual distance of the fall.
- Flight (Ex): When a Gargoyle reaches 5 Hit Dice, she becomes able to fly at a speed of 40 feet (average maneuverability). A Gargoyle can't fly while carrying a medium or heavy load or while fatigued or exhausted. Gargoyles can safely fly for a number of rounds equal to their Constitution modifier (minimum 1 round). They can exert themselves to fly for up to twice as long, but then they're fatigued at the end of the flight. Gargoyles are likewise fatigued after spending a total of more than 10 minutes per day flying. Because Gargoyles can glide before, after, and between rounds of actual flight, they can remain aloft for extended periods (even if they can only use flight for 1 round at a time without becoming fatigued).
- When they reach 10 Hit Dice, Gargoyles have enough stamina and prowess to fly for longer periods. They can fly at a speed of 60 feet (average maneuverability), and flying requires no more exertion than walking or running. A Gargoyle with flight can make a dive attack. A dive attack works like a charge, but the Gargoyle must move a minimum of 30 feet and descend at least 10 feet. A Gargoyle can make a dive attack only when wielding a piercing weapon; if the attack hits, it deals double damage. A Gargoyle with flight can use the run action while flying, provided she flies in a straight line.
- Skills: Gargoyles have a +2 racial bonus on Hide, Listen, and Spot checks. The Hide bonus increases by +8 (to a total of +10) when a gargoyle is concealed against a background of stone.
