Coconut of the Horseless Traveller

Coconut of the Horseless Traveller
Price: 2000 GP
Body Slot: Held
Caster Level: 1
Aura: Faint Conjuration
Activation: Use-Activated
Weight: 1 Pound. Cannot be carried by a 5 ounce bird

An invention of the mad gnome artificer "Dr." Micros Madcap (for who else but a mad gnome could come up with something like this), this item has the unremarkable appearance of a coconut that has been split in half (and in fact, they actually are). However, they enable their users to travel as though they were riding a horse. However, they require two people in order to be used. They must stand single file less than five feet apart from one another. The person stands in front and makes the motions of riding a horse, with their hands positioned as if gripping the reigns and moving up and down as they walk as though riding a horse. The person in the back must bang the coconut halves together in the pattern of clopping horse hooves, following the first person as closely as possible. As long as they continue making the hoof-clopping sounds, the two can continue traveling as though they were actually riding a horse, covering the same distance each day that a light horse could. The person in back also adds the horse’s carrying capacity to his own for as long as he holds the coconut halves (allowing him to continue carrying large loads even if standing “idle”), but only if he has one half in each hand. If he drops or puts away the coconuts, he loses this extra carrying capacity. They also do not gain any increase in movement speed. The person up front is considered to be sitting on a horse for as long as the second person is holding the coconuts and, if he wants to walk normally, he must perform a dismounting motion as though actually getting off a horse. If the second person drops or puts away the coconut halves before the rider has a chance to do this, the rider must make a DC 15 Reflex save or fall to the ground as though they had fallen off a horse. They must also make this save if they stop making the “holding on to the reigns” motion. Obviously, this arrangement looks very silly to onlookers, but the participants never acknowledge that they are not on a horse unless the coconuts are directly mentioned by someone else. Neither participant can enter combat while using the Coconut of the Horseless Traveller, thus Ride-by Attack cannot be used in conjunction with them, nor can the rider benefit from the extra damage a lance gains from a charge. Coconuts of the Horseless Traveller can be used anywhere, although outside of a tropical climate, their appearance can lead to questions about where they came from. The ones using the Coconut of the Horseless Traveller are often very evasive such questions, often claiming that they simply “found them”. This statement often leads to arguments about coconuts migrating or whether or not they could be carried and brought over by a swallow
