Unlimited Sorcerer[edit]

Variant of the sorcerer, expanded to both encompass any spellcasting and focused on long-term viability and spammability. Built with pathfinder sensibilities in mind, but it works in 3.5 as well.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Unlimited Sorcerer.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Unlimited Sorcerers are proficient with all simple weapons. They are not proficient with any type of armor or shield. Armor interferes with a sorcerer’s gestures, which can cause her spells with somatic components to fail.

Spells: An unlimited sorcerer casts arcane spells drawn the spell list of any 9 spell level caster (normally clerics, druids, and sorcerer/wizards, but not paladins or bards). Regardless of the origin of the spell, the spell is considered an arcane spell when cast by yourself. She can cast any spell she knows without preparing it ahead of time. To learn or cast a spell, an unlimited sorcerer must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against an unlimited sorcerer’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the unlimited sorcerer’s Charisma modifier.

Like other spellcasters, a sorcerer can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Her base daily spell allotment is given on Table: Unlimited Sorcerer. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if she has a high Charisma score (see Table: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Spells).

An unlimited sorcerer’s selection of spells is extremely limited. An unlimited sorcerer begins play knowing four 0-level spells and two 1st-level spells of her choice. At each new unlimited sorcerer level, she gains one or more new spells, as indicated on Table: Sorcerer Spells Known. (Unlike spells per day, the number of spells a sorcerer knows is not affected by her Charisma score; the numbers on Table: Sorcerer Spells Known are fixed.) These new spells can be common spells chosen from the sorcerer/wizard spell list, or they can be unusual spells that the sorcerer has gained some understanding of through study.

At each level, an unlimited sorcerer can choose to learn a new spell in place of one she already knows. In effect, the unlimited sorcerer loses the old spell in exchange for the new one. The new spell’s level must be the same as that of the spell being exchanged. An unlimited sorcerer may swap only a single spell at any given level, and must choose whether or not to swap the spell at the same time that she gains new spells known for the level.

Unlike a wizard or a cleric an unlimited sorcerer need not prepare her spells in advance. She can cast any spell she knows at any time, assuming she has not yet used up her spells per day for that spell level. When using metamagic, an unlimited sorcerer does not take longer to cast the metamagic altered spell, and they may use Quicken Spell normally.

Bonus Feats: At 1st, 7th, 13th, and 19th level, a unlimited sorcerer gains a bonus feat. At each such opportunity, he can choose a metamagic feat, an item creation, or feats that grant or improve familiars. The wizard must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including caster level minimums.

Cantrips: Unlimited Sorcerers learn a number of cantrips, or 0-level spells, as noted on Table: Unlimited Sorcerer Spells Known under “Spells Known.” These spells are cast like any other spell, but they do not consume any slots and may be used again.

Eschew Materials: An unlimited sorcerer gains Eschew Materials as a bonus feat at 1st level.

Charge Item (Su): The 2nd level unlimited sorcerer can fuel magical items such as wands and staves with limited charges with their own abilities. So long as it replicates a spell effect, you may expend a spell slot of equal to higher level to cast said spell without consuming a charge on the wand or stave. It requires at least 1 charge remaining in said item.

Magic Armor (Su): The magic potential in a 2nd level or higher unlimited sorcerer keeps them safe from harm. They may add their Charisma modifier as an armor bonus to AC. This does not stack with any armor they wear, but mage armor and greater mage armor]] increase it by +2 and +4 points respectively for their durations.

High Magic: A 3rd level unlimited sorcerer gains Heighten Spell as a bonus feat.

Innate Casting (Sp): The magic is such a part of an unlimited sorcerer's being that they can cast without effort. At 4th level they may cast any spell they know as a spell-like ability, expending the spell slot as normal but not requiring verbal or somatic components. You must still pay any expensive material or xp components as normal. Its caster level is equal to your HD if it would otherwise be lower. You may use this once per day, an an additional time per day at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th.

Unlimited Spell: At 6th level, an unlimited sorcerer's wellspring of energy not only covers parlor tricks and cantrips, but more serious magical effects. They may cast their 1st level unlimited sorcerer spells without expending a spell slot, so long as it is unaugmented by metamagic effects (in which case you expend the slot normally). You also expend the slot normally for any other effect, such as consumption via Arcane StrikeCW. At 10th level, this increases to 2nd level spells. At 14th level, they may cast 3rd level spells without expending a spell slot. Finally at 18th level, 4th level spells become unlimited. Lower level spells cast with higher level spell slots still consume the appropriate spell slots.

Warp Reality (Sp): The 20th level unlimited sorcerer can warp reality in a way not unlike a wish spell. Once per day they may cast any one spell from any list up to 9th level, even if they do not have it as a spell known. It is a spell-like ability, but they still must pay any expensive material or xp components. The strain of altering reality leaves them unable to cast spells for 1d4 rounds after, so it is typically used for important finishing events.

Unlimited Sorcerers in the Game[edit]

Adaptation: The unlimited sorcerer leans into the base concept of the sorcerer (few spells, but spells all day), offering expansions via monetary investments. They are encouraged to keep an array of useful utility spells on wands and staves, while maintaining their usual fare as spells known. They were expanded to all spells so that the concept may envelop other similar sorcerer-likes such as the oracle and permit themes that would delve into the natural or divine. As a variant to this variant, you are free to restrict them to cleric, druid, or sorcerer/wizard rather than and.

Spells per day based on pathfinder sorcerer, adding one to spells known to account for missing spells that would otherwise arise from a bloodline.
